Ichibata Yakushi Temple

A Sacred Mountain Retreat with Panoramic Views

Ichibata Yakushi Temple, officially known as Ichibata-ji, is a historic temple of the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It is widely known throughout Japan as the temple of the “Medicine Buddha for the Eyes” and has attracted worshippers for centuries.

The temple stands on Mount Ichibata at an elevation of approximately 200 meters, near the center of the Shimane Peninsula. From the temple grounds, visitors can enjoy spectacular views over Lake Shinji, Mount Daisen, and Mount Sanbe. With its sacred atmosphere and sweeping natural scenery, Ichibata Yakushi offers a peaceful retreat that feels almost as if it were suspended above the surrounding landscape.

The History and Origins of Ichibata Yakushi

A Story of Faith Dating Back to the Heian Period

The history of Ichibata Yakushi dates back to 894, during the Heian period. According to tradition, a fisherman named Yoichi recovered a statue of the Medicine Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, from the Sea of Japan and enshrined it as the temple’s principal Buddhist image.

Legend tells of a miraculous event involving Yoichi and his blind mother. After receiving guidance in a dream, Yoichi undertook a dangerous journey, and his mother’s eyesight was said to have been restored. Because of this story, Ichibata Yakushi became widely revered as the “Yakushi of the Eyes”.

A Temple for Many Prayers and Wishes

Over the centuries, people have visited Ichibata Yakushi not only to pray for relief from eye-related illnesses but also for children’s healthy growth, recovery from illness, and general well-being.

During the Sengoku period, the temple also received strong support from powerful feudal lords, who made donations and helped preserve religious and cultural treasures.

Today, worshippers continue to visit from across Japan. The temple remains a place where people come to pray, hold memorial services, and take part in Buddhist practices and experiences.

Highlights of the Temple Grounds

The Yakushi Main Hall and Historic Buildings

The heart of the temple complex is the Yakushi Main Hall, where Yakushi Rurikokonyorai, the Medicine Buddha, is enshrined as the principal Buddhist image.

The grounds also include the Kannon Hall, Lecture Hall, Kaikido Hall, Bell Tower, and other historic buildings. Although many of these structures have been rebuilt or repaired over the centuries, they continue to convey the deep religious and cultural heritage of Ichibata Yakushi.

Hachiman-Yonsenbutsudo – A Remarkable Hall of Buddhist Images

One of the most striking places on the temple grounds is the Hachiman-Yonsenbutsudo, or “Hall of 84,000 Buddhas.” The hall is being developed with the aim of enshrining 84,000 Buddhist statues, a number that symbolizes the vastness of Buddhist teachings.

The sight of numerous Buddhist images gathered in this sacred space creates a powerful and memorable atmosphere.

The 1,300 Stone Steps to the Temple

Ichibata Yakushi is also famous for its approach of approximately 1,300 stone steps. For generations, worshippers have climbed these steps toward the main hall, treating the journey itself as a way to prepare both body and mind for prayer.

Today, visitors can drive almost to the top of the mountain. However, those who choose to climb the traditional stone staircase can experience a stronger sense of the pilgrimage tradition and the physical effort once undertaken by worshippers.

A marathon event is also held each year in which participants race up the long staircase, attracting many challengers.

Panoramic Views and Natural Beauty

Sweeping Views of Lake Shinji and the Mountains

One of the greatest attractions of Ichibata Yakushi is the spectacular panorama from the temple grounds. Lake Shinji spreads across the landscape below, while Mount Daisen, Mount Sanbe, and other mountains can be seen in the distance.

The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. Fresh green foliage in spring, clear blue skies in summer, colorful autumn leaves, and crisp winter air each create a different atmosphere.

A Peaceful Retreat Above the Surrounding Landscape

Because the temple is located high on the mountain, the grounds are surrounded by a quiet atmosphere and fresh mountain air. Visitors can come not only to worship but also to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and spend peaceful time away from the bustle of everyday life.

Hands-On Buddhist and Cultural Experiences

Zen Meditation and Sutra-Copying Experiences

Visitors can take part in Buddhist experiences such as zazen meditation and sutra copying.

Zazen requires advance reservation and provides an opportunity to calm the mind in the temple’s quiet surroundings. Sutra copying can be experienced on the day without advance participation arrangements, making it accessible even to first-time visitors.

Prayers and Annual Religious Events

Prayers are offered at the main hall every day for purposes including good health, protection from misfortune, and recovery from eye-related illnesses. Visitors can apply to participate on the day.

The temple also hosts a variety of annual events. These include the monthly festival known as Yoka-san on the eighth day of each month, major spring and autumn festivals, and a special memorial service for eyeglasses.
