Izumo-taisha is one of the oldest shrines along with Ise Jingu Shrine. It is dedicated to Okuninushi no Mikoto, popularly known as Daikoku-sama.
It is famous as the god of marriage, the god of good fortune, and the god of peace, and is especially known as Japan’s representative god of “matchmaking,” with over 10 million people visiting the shrine every year to pray for a good match.
The main shrine, built in 1744 in the Taisha-zukuri style, the oldest form of shrine architecture in Japan, is designated as a national treasure. The method of worship differs from that of ordinary shrines: “Ni-ai, shi-ai, shi-ai, shi-ai, shi-ai.
The Kammon-dori street, the main approach to Izumo-taisha Shrine, has large gate row houses and house structures, and the town houses, along with their quiet demeanor, convey the long family lineage of the shrine.
A wide variety of stores line the street, including stores selling match-making goods, jewelry made of slotted beads, and zenzai mochi (sweet rice cakes).
