Kamokimi no Yu is a day-use hot spring facility in Gose City, Nara Prefecture, nestled at the foot of the Katsuragi Mountains. Located next to the Aqua Center water treatment facility, it is surrounded by a spacious park featuring an athletic play area, herb garden, and walking paths. With its natural hot springs and peaceful green surroundings, it is an inviting place to relax and recharge while exploring the Nara region.
The name Kamokimi no Yu reflects the ancient spiritual heritage of the Katsuragi area, a region traditionally associated with the dwelling places of the gods. The name also evokes Kamo, an ancient place-name linked to the foothills of Mount Kongo and Mount Katsuragi.
This landscape is connected with myths recorded in the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s oldest historical chronicles. In ancient times, dense forests covered the area, and the mountains and woodlands were revered as kannabi—sacred places where deities were believed to reside. Bathing in the hot springs here offers a chance to unwind in a setting deeply rooted in the mythology and spiritual traditions of Japan.
The spring water is classified as a sodium bicarbonate and chloride hot spring. Its smooth, slightly slippery texture has earned it a reputation as a beauty bath, making it a popular choice for visitors seeking a soothing bathing experience.
The facility has two large public bathing areas, named Tsuru no Yu and Kame no Yu. Depending on the day, visitors can enjoy a selection of more than 15 types of baths and sauna facilities, including carbonated baths, seated baths, reclining baths, cascading massage showers, hinoki cypress baths, and rock baths.
The open-air baths are especially appealing, allowing guests to soak in warm water while enjoying the fresh air and natural scenery of the Katsuragi foothills. The variety of bathing options makes it easy to find a comfortable way to relax, whether you prefer a traditional bath or a more invigorating experience.
Kamokimi no Yu welcomes visitors of all generations, from young children to older adults. Facilities include private family baths, relaxation rooms, body-care services, a manga reading corner, and multipurpose rooms.
A renovation in 2021 further enhanced the visitor experience, adding facilities such as a restaurant, shop, and karaoke rooms. Guests can therefore spend time relaxing even after their bath, enjoying a meal, browsing local products, or unwinding with family and friends.
The adjoining park is another attraction for families, with large playground equipment and a grass-sledding area. On weekends and holidays, the park and hot spring complex make a popular destination for a full day of leisure.
Kamokimi no Yu is an excellent place to take a break after a day of sightseeing, on the way home from work, or following a walk along the historic Katsuragi Kodo trail or an excursion into the Mount Kongo and Mount Yamato Katsuragi areas.
Combining naturally soothing hot spring waters, family-friendly amenities, and the rich cultural atmosphere of an ancient sacred landscape, Kamokimi no Yu offers a welcoming retreat where visitors can relax and recover from the day’s activities.
