Karuizawa Town History and Folklore Museum

Discover the History and Traditional Life of Karuizawa

The Karuizawa Town History and Folklore Museum is a local history museum in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, dedicated to preserving and introducing the region’s rich history, culture, and traditional way of life.

The museum began in 1963 as the Karuizawa Town Museum. Since then, it has collected and displayed a wide range of materials documenting the development of Karuizawa, its cultural activities, and the distinctive lifestyles shaped by its cool, highland climate.

How the Museum Was Established

The museum originated in 1963 when the former villa of Kazue Katsuta, who had served as Japan’s Minister of Finance, was acquired and opened as the Karuizawa Town Museum. Local cultural properties, historical documents, and everyday objects were gradually collected and exhibited.

As the collection grew, a larger facility became necessary. In 1979, a special committee was established to plan a new history and folklore museum. The following year, in 1980, the museum reopened as a full-scale institution based on Japan’s Museum Act.

Permanent Exhibitions

Exhibition Room 1: Roads, Transportation, and the History of Karuizawa

The first exhibition room explores how Karuizawa developed as an important transportation hub from ancient times onward. Visitors can see archaeological discoveries from sites such as the Mozawa Minami-Ishido Site and the Iriyama Pass Ritual Site, including artifacts dating from the middle and late Jomon Period.

The exhibition also introduces the three historic post towns of the Nakasendo route: Karuizawa-juku, Kutsukake-juku, and Oiwake-juku. Historical documents relating to the journeys of feudal lords during the sankin-kotai system, records associated with Princess Kazunomiya’s journey to Edo, traditional horse equipment, and sections of the Abt-style railway rack rail used across the steep Usui Pass are among the highlights.

Together, these exhibits reveal how transportation routes shaped the history, economy, and culture of Karuizawa.

Exhibition Room 2: Villas, Literature, and Cultural Life

The second exhibition room focuses on the transformation of Karuizawa into a fashionable summer resort and cultural destination from the Meiji period onward.

Among the exhibits are a model of a Meiji-era villa, a literary map of Karuizawa, and materials related to Alexander Croft Shaw, the Canadian missionary who played an important role in introducing Karuizawa as a summer retreat to foreign visitors.

The museum also displays a collection of Chinese ceramics assembled by the late Saburo Yoshizawa. These artworks offer another perspective on the sophisticated cultural atmosphere that developed in Karuizawa as artists, writers, intellectuals, and foreign residents gathered here.

Exhibition Room 3: Life in a Cool Highland Environment

The third exhibition room explores everyday life in Karuizawa’s cool, high-altitude environment. Traditional agricultural tools and household implements demonstrate how local residents adapted their lifestyles and farming techniques to the area’s challenging climate.

Among the exhibits are an insulated nursery bed system devised by Toyoji Ogiwara and traditional tools once used in the production of natural ice. These objects provide an intriguing look at the practical knowledge and ingenuity developed by local communities over generations.

A Collection Spanning Thousands of Years

The museum’s collection covers an extraordinary span of time, from the Jomon Period to the modern era. Visitors can explore ancient pottery, historical documents relating to the development of post towns along the Nakasendo, traditional household objects, agricultural tools, and other materials connected with local life.

Rather than simply being historical artifacts, these objects preserve the memories of the people who lived in Karuizawa. Together, they offer a deeper understanding of how the region developed and how its residents adapted to their surroundings.

Poetry and the Former Mountain Villa of Suiko Sugiura

Within the museum grounds stands a monument engraved with a poem by Suiko Sugiura, a poet and cultural figure associated with Karuizawa.

The monument was relocated from the site of her former mountain villa in Nakakaruizawa. Surrounded by the quiet atmosphere of the museum grounds, it creates a peaceful space where literature and the natural scenery of Karuizawa come together.

Former Konoe Fumimaro Villa: Ichimura Memorial Hall

A Historic Villa Preserved for Future Generations

Another important site associated with the museum is the Former Konoe Fumimaro Villa, now known as the Ichimura Memorial Hall.

The building was donated by the family of Kesazo Ichimura in 1999 and was subsequently opened as a museum facility. Inside, visitors can see valuable materials related to former Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe, as well as exhibits introducing the achievements of Keijiro Amemiya, a businessman who played an important role in the development of Karuizawa.

The building and its exhibits provide an additional perspective on the modern history of Karuizawa and the people who helped shape its development as a resort destination.

Location of Ichimura Memorial Hall

The Former Konoe Fumimaro Villa, or Ichimura Memorial Hall, is located at 2112-21 Nagakura, Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. It is housed in a separate building from the museum’s main facility, but its exhibits complement those of the main museum and allow visitors to explore Karuizawa’s history in greater depth.

A Deeper Look at Karuizawa Beyond the Resort

Karuizawa is widely known today as a fashionable mountain resort, but its story stretches far beyond villas, hotels, and summer retreats. Its history includes prehistoric settlements, ancient transportation routes, Nakasendo post towns, traditional agriculture, natural ice production, and the arrival of foreign residents and cultural figures during the Meiji era.

The Karuizawa Town History and Folklore Museum brings these diverse stories together in one place. For travelers interested in discovering the history behind the resort town, the museum offers an opportunity to see Karuizawa from a different perspective and gain a deeper appreciation of its culture and local way of life.
