The Kobe Municipal Forest Botanical Garden is a spacious botanical garden located in Kita Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Opened in 1940, it covers approximately 142.6 hectares on the slopes of the Rokko Mountains, west of Mount Maya and north of Mount Futatabi. The garden lies within Setonaikai National Park and reaches an elevation of approximately 440 meters near its main entrance, offering a refreshing escape into nature.
The garden is home to approximately 1,200 species of trees from Japan and other parts of the world. These plants are arranged in themed zones that recreate forests from their original regions, allowing visitors to explore a variety of woodland environments in one location.
Each season brings a different landscape, from fresh greenery and colorful flowers in spring and summer to spectacular autumn foliage. The garden is particularly popular during the fall, when its trees transform into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.
The garden features a diverse range of themed areas, botanical collections, and recreational facilities, including:
International Forest Zones: Riga Forest, Brisbane Forest, Seattle Forest, and Tianjin Forest, along with the European, North American, Asian, and Northern Japan sections. These areas introduce visitors to trees and woodland environments from different parts of the world.
Japanese Forest Zones: The Evergreen Broadleaf Forest and Japanese Conifer Forest sections showcase characteristic woodland vegetation found in Japan. The Forest of Memories provides another peaceful setting for enjoying the natural surroundings.
Flower Gardens: The Cherry Blossom Garden, Azalea and Rhododendron Garden, Hydrangea Garden, Sample Garden, and Flowering Tree Garden feature seasonal displays of flowering plants and ornamental trees.
Nature and Recreation Areas: Hase Pond, the Wild Bird Forest, the Learning Forest, the Japanese Serow Plaza, Rabbit Land, a multipurpose open space, and a sports field offer opportunities to observe wildlife, learn about nature, and enjoy outdoor activities.
Among these attractions, Hase Pond is especially famous for its autumn foliage. In fall, the colorful trees surrounding the water create a beautiful reflection, making the pond one of the garden’s most picturesque spots. The nearby Wild Bird Forest is also a rewarding destination for birdwatching, with many wild birds found around the woodland and pond.
The Forest Exhibition Hall is one of the garden’s main facilities. It houses exhibition rooms featuring information about forests and plants, as well as a restaurant, café, and museum shop. Visitors can deepen their understanding of the natural world while taking a break from walking through the extensive grounds.
The hall is also conveniently located near Brisbane Forest and the Metasequoia tree-lined avenue, making it a useful starting point for exploring some of the garden’s most attractive walking routes.
The garden is generally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. Opening hours may be extended or adjusted during special events.
The regular closing day is Wednesday, or Thursday when Wednesday falls on a national holiday. The garden may remain open every day during certain special events. It is also closed from December 29 through January 3 for the New Year holiday period.
Admission costs ¥300 for visitors aged 15 and older and ¥150 for elementary and junior high school students. Group discounts are available for parties of 15 or more, and residents of Hyogo Prefecture aged 65 and over can enter free of charge, subject to applicable conditions.

From the east exit of Kita-Suzurandai Station on the Kobe Electric Railway, a free scheduled shuttle bus takes approximately 10 minutes to reach the garden. The service operates eight round trips per day.
From JR Sannomiya Station, visitors can take Minato Kanko Bus routes 22 or 211 to Sakura Morimachi Bus Center. From there, the garden can be reached via a hiking route of approximately 20 minutes on foot.
