Kouri Beach is a beautiful swimming beach located at the foot of the iconic Kouri Bridge on Kouri Island in northern Okinawa. Known for its exceptionally clear water, soft white sand, and spectacular views of the bridge, it is one of the island’s most popular places to enjoy the sea.
Kouri Island is famous as the “Island of Love”, thanks to a local legend that resembles the story of Adam and Eve. Reaching the island by crossing the 1,960-meter Kouri Bridge is an attraction in itself, with the road stretching across the emerald-green sea and creating the sensation of driving directly over the water.
Immediately after crossing the bridge, Kouri Beach can be found on the left. The combination of the brilliant blue sea, white sand, and sweeping view of Kouri Bridge creates an especially photogenic Okinawan landscape.
Kouri Beach is an inviting place for travelers who simply want to slow down and enjoy the tropical scenery. The exceptionally clear water and gentle coastal atmosphere make it easy to spend a relaxing few hours by the sea.
At the same time, the beach offers a variety of marine activities that can be enjoyed with family and friends. Swimming, snorkeling, and beach volleyball are among the activities available, making the beach suitable for both relaxation and active seaside fun.
One of the defining features of Kouri Beach is its view of Kouri Bridge. The 1,960-meter bridge stretches between Kouri Island and Yagaji Island, standing out dramatically against the surrounding blue and emerald-green sea.
After enjoying the beach, visitors can also take a drive across the bridge and experience the changing views from the road. On a clear day, the combination of the bridge and tropical sea creates one of the most memorable driving scenes in northern Okinawa.
Kouri Island is deeply associated with a local creation legend. According to the story, a young man and woman known as Adam and Eve were the first people to arrive on the island and eventually became the ancestors of the people of Okinawa.
This legend has helped give Kouri Island its romantic nickname, the “Island of Love.” As a result, Kouri Beach and other locations around the island are also popular among couples and travelers looking for romantic scenery.
The greatest natural attraction of Kouri Beach is its remarkably transparent sea. On sunny days, the water takes on brilliant shades of emerald green and blue, creating a landscape that looks almost like a painting.
Coral reefs can also be found around the coastline, supporting a variety of marine life. Exploring the clear waters can provide a closer look at Okinawa’s colorful underwater environment.
Kouri Beach has a different atmosphere throughout the day. The bright morning light highlights the clarity of the water, while the afternoon sun creates beautiful reflections across the sea.
As evening approaches, the beach becomes an attractive place to watch the sunset. The changing colors of the sky and sea provide a spectacular backdrop for photographs and a peaceful way to end a day of sightseeing.
Kouri Beach offers facilities designed to make a seaside visit comfortable, including parking, changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. Cafés and restaurants can also be found nearby, allowing visitors to enjoy meals and drinks after spending time in the water.
Close to the beach is the Kouri Specialty Products Center, where visitors can browse local products and look for souvenirs to take home. The combination of shopping, cafés, and beach activities makes the area convenient for a relaxed day trip.
The beautiful scenery of Kouri Beach depends on the health of its coastal environment. Local conservation efforts include beach-cleaning activities and initiatives to protect coral reefs.
Visitors are encouraged to respect the natural surroundings by avoiding damage to coral and marine life, keeping the beach clean, and following local rules. Small actions by travelers can help preserve Kouri’s beautiful coastline for future generations.
Various events and activities take place at Kouri Beach throughout the year. Summer is particularly lively, with beach festivals and marine sports events bringing an energetic atmosphere to the coast.
Local cultural events also provide opportunities to experience traditional Okinawan music and dance, adding a cultural dimension to a day spent enjoying the beach.
Kouri Beach is easily accessible by car from Okinawa Island via Kouri Bridge. From Naha Airport, the drive takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, making the beach a convenient destination for a day trip or scenic road journey through northern Okinawa.
