Teenu Beach and Heart Rock are among the most romantic places to visit on Kouri Island, a small island in northern Okinawa surrounded by brilliant emerald-green waters. Kouri Island is widely known as the “Island of Love” and is associated with an Okinawan legend about the origins of humanity, similar in some ways to the story of Adam and Eve.
The island has a radius of approximately 1 kilometer and became easily accessible by car when Kouri Bridge opened in 2005. Driving across the bridge gives visitors the exhilarating sensation of traveling directly over the sea.
The island can also be circled by car in about 10 minutes along the Kouri Island Loop Road, making it easy to explore its beaches and scenic viewpoints.
On the northern coast of Kouri Island lies Teenu Beach, home to the island’s iconic Heart Rock. The heart-shaped formation was created naturally through many years of wave erosion, with two rocks overlapping in a way that produces a distinctive heart shape.
Although the beach is relatively small, its crystal-clear blue water and white sand create a beautiful tropical setting. Teenu Beach is known as an ichanda beach, a traditional Okinawan term for a natural beach that is freely accessible without an entrance fee. Tokei Beach is also located nearby.
The beach is suitable for enjoying the sea during the warmer months, but its romantic atmosphere is especially appealing around sunset. Couples and photographers often visit in the late afternoon to enjoy the changing colors of the sky and sea.
One of the most fascinating things about Heart Rock is that three different heart shapes can be discovered depending on where you look from.
Viewed from the beach, one of the rocks on the left forms a small and charming heart shape. This is the classic image most visitors associate with Heart Rock.
When the two rocks are viewed directly in line with each other, their overlapping shapes combine to create what appears to be a single large heart.
When the two rocks are viewed side by side, the open space between them forms an upside-down heart. The blue sea visible through the opening creates the impression of a brilliant blue heart floating in the landscape.
This third heart is not always visible, however. At high tide, the opening can be hidden by the sea.
Teenu Beach retains the untouched character of a natural beach. Its exceptionally clear blue water can appear in different shades depending on the weather, sunlight, and time of day.
The combination of white sand, vivid blue water, and the naturally sculpted Heart Rock creates a scene that feels almost too perfect to be real.
Because Heart Rock stands along the northern coast of Kouri Island, the setting sun passes behind the rocks in the evening. As the sun descends, its warm light illuminates the heart-shaped formation and gradually transforms the surrounding sea and beach.
The sight of Heart Rock silhouetted against an orange and crimson sunset is one of the most memorable experiences at Teenu Beach. In the evening, the entire landscape can take on a mysterious and dreamlike atmosphere.
For the best sunset views, arrive well before sunset and allow enough time to walk down to the beach and find a suitable viewing spot.
Visitors leave their cars at the parking area and continue to Teenu Beach on foot. The approach includes slopes and rocky sections, and some parts of the path can be uneven, so appropriate footwear and careful walking are recommended.
The natural character of the beach is part of its appeal, but it also means that visitors should take care while moving around the rocks and shoreline.
Teenu Beach and Heart Rock have become famous throughout Japan after appearing in a television commercial featuring a popular idol group. Since then, the heart-shaped rocks have become one of Kouri Island’s best-known attractions.
Yet the appeal of Teenu Beach goes beyond the famous rock itself. The untouched shoreline, exceptionally clear water, white sand, and dramatic sunsets create a beautiful natural setting that captures the romantic spirit of the “Island of Love.”
Visit during the late afternoon, watch the sunlight turn Heart Rock golden, and stay as the sky changes color over the emerald-green sea. It is a simple but unforgettable way to experience one of northern Okinawa’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
