Koumi Kogen Museum of Art

Where Contemporary Art Meets the Yatsugatake Landscape

Koumi Kogen Museum of Art is a municipal art museum in Koumi Town, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. Opened in 1997, the museum was designed by internationally renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

The building’s clean lines and exposed reinforced-concrete surfaces create a sophisticated modern atmosphere, while its architecture is carefully integrated with the surrounding natural landscape. Inside, visitors can discover works by artists connected with the local area, as well as exhibitions focusing on contemporary art, design, and architecture.

The museum offers more than an opportunity to view art. Its setting at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains allows visitors to experience the relationship between architecture, art, and nature in a particularly memorable way.

A Museum Where Architecture and Nature Become One

The museum stands in the Matsubara Lake Highland area at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The building consists of one underground floor and one above-ground floor, with a viewing deck on the roof.

From the rooftop deck, visitors can look across the magnificent mountains of Northern Yatsugatake. Views from inside the museum extend toward the beautiful Chichibu Mountains. The changing scenery provides a natural backdrop to the exhibitions throughout the year.

Tadao Ando’s architecture makes effective use of the texture and geometric character of exposed reinforced concrete while maintaining a strong connection with the surrounding greenery. The result is a space where the simplicity of modern architecture and the beauty of the highland landscape complement one another.

Art Collections and Special Exhibitions

One of the museum’s distinctive features is its focus on both artists connected with the local region and contemporary art, design, and architecture. The collection includes works by several notable artists.

Kesao Kuribayashi

Kesao Kuribayashi was a painter who lived in Koumi and was formerly a member of the Kokuga-kai, an important Japanese artists’ association. His connection with the local community forms an important part of the museum’s regional artistic identity.

Tatsu-zō Shimaoka

Tatsu-zō Shimaoka was a renowned ceramic artist associated with Mashiko pottery. Born in 1919, he studied under Shōji Hamada, one of the leading figures in the development of modern Japanese folk ceramics.

Shimaoka developed his own distinctive Jōmon-zōgan inlay technique and made a major contribution to the development of Japanese folk pottery. He was later designated a Living National Treasure for his achievements.

The museum’s collection allows visitors to appreciate his warm, expressive ceramic works at close range. His pieces combine the simplicity and strength of traditional Japanese pottery with a distinctly modern artistic sensibility.

Kiyomitsu Tanimoto

Kiyomitsu Tanimoto is another painter associated with Koumi. His work and connection with the town represent the museum’s commitment to preserving and introducing the artistic heritage of the local community.

Music, Design, and Contemporary Art

The museum’s collection extends beyond painting and ceramics. It also houses a valuable collection of SP records from before World War II, creating opportunities for exhibitions that explore connections between music and visual art.

Special exhibitions have also explored contemporary art and design. In the past, the museum has presented works associated with internationally recognized Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, demonstrating the breadth of its exhibition program.

Enjoy Art with Panoramic Mountain Views

The Rooftop Viewing Deck

The rooftop viewing deck is one of the museum’s most appealing features. From here, visitors can enjoy broad views of the Northern Yatsugatake mountains and watch the scenery change with the seasons.

In autumn, colorful foliage covers the surrounding landscape, while winter brings snow-covered mountains and a quiet, monochromatic atmosphere. Spring greenery and the fresh colors of summer create their own distinctive views.

The deck provides a chance to pause after visiting the galleries and appreciate the landscape that inspired the museum’s architectural setting.

Combine Art with a Highland Hot Spring

Next to the museum is Matsubara Lake Hot Spring “Yahho-no-Yu”. A popular way to spend the day is to combine an art museum visit with a relaxing soak in the hot springs.

A discount system is available when visiting both facilities, making it easy to enjoy a cultural experience followed by traditional Japanese hot spring bathing. The shared parking area also makes the combination convenient for visitors traveling by car.

Explore the Surrounding Koumi Highlands

The museum is located in an area rich in natural attractions. After visiting, travelers can explore Lake Matsubara, walk through the surrounding highland forests, or venture farther into the Yatsugatake Mountains.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area provides access to hiking and mountain activities. Combining art, mountain scenery, and hot springs creates a relaxing itinerary that showcases several different aspects of the Koumi region.

A Unique Encounter with Art, Architecture, and Nature

Koumi Kogen Museum of Art brings together the architecture of Tadao Ando, works by artists connected with the region, contemporary art, and the magnificent scenery of the Yatsugatake Mountains.

Rather than simply viewing artworks inside a gallery, visitors can experience how art and architecture interact with the surrounding natural environment. The changing mountain scenery outside becomes part of the experience itself.

For travelers interested in Japanese contemporary art, modern architecture, traditional ceramics, or simply looking for a peaceful cultural stop in the mountains, Koumi Kogen Museum of Art offers a distinctive experience. Add a visit to the nearby hot spring and Lake Matsubara, and it becomes an ideal way to spend a leisurely day surrounded by the highland scenery of Nagano.
