Momogaike Park

A Relaxing Park Surrounded by Water and Flowers

Momogaike Park is a lush district park located in Momogaike, Abeno Ward, Osaka City. Centered around a beautiful pond and surrounded by greenery, it is a popular place for local residents and visitors to relax and enjoy nature.

The park was established by Osaka City and covers an area of approximately 71,448 square meters. Around Momogaike Pond, visitors can enjoy walking paths and a children’s playground, creating a pleasant space for people of all ages.

Flowering peach trees and cherry trees are planted throughout the park, creating a particularly beautiful scene in spring. During the cherry blossom season, the park attracts many visitors for hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying flowers. The park can also be seen from trains running on the JR Hanwa Line, making its convenient location one of its attractions.

History of the Park

The Origin and Evolution of the Name

The name “Momogaike” has an interesting history. The pond was known by several names in the past, including “Hyakugaike,” “Sune-ga-ike,” and “Momogaike”. These names are said to have been derived from the shape and geographical features of the pond.

When the city developed the area as a park in 1933, the easier-to-read name “Momogaike” was adopted and eventually became the official name used today. Within the park, Matogaike Myojin remains as a reminder of one of the area’s older names.

A History of Agriculture and Fishing

From the Meiji period through the Taisho period, the surrounding area was largely rural, and Momogaike Pond was used as a source of irrigation water for agriculture.

Carp and crucian carp were also raised in the pond, while eels and catfish became known as local specialties.

Momogaike Park officially opened on October 25, 1933. Its development has been regarded as a successful example of park planning based on Japan’s early urban planning initiatives.

Matogaike Myojin and Local Legends

The Legend of Prince Shotoku and the Great Serpent

A legend associated with Momogaike tells of Prince Shotoku defeating a giant serpent that lived in the area. A place known as Orochi-zuka was reportedly established to comfort the spirit of the defeated serpent, and traces of the site are said to have remained until the early Showa period.

Matogaike Myojin, located within the park, was established during the Tenmei era (1781–1789) to enshrine and appease the spirit of the serpent.

The shrine contains statues of Fudo Myoo and Jizo Bosatsu and continues to be maintained by local residents. It is also said that waterfall ascetic practices were once performed within the shrine grounds.

The Tanabe Kofun Group and Archaeological Sites

Evidence of Ancient Settlement

The area surrounding Momogaike Park has been inhabited since ancient times, and archaeological remains dating to the Yayoi period have been discovered here.

Valuable artifacts were also uncovered during construction work for the elevated Hanwa Line and during the construction of nearby apartment buildings.

The area was also home to the Tanabe Kofun Group, a collection of ancient burial mounds. Research has revealed that Yamasaka Shrine also incorporates part of an ancient burial mound.

These archaeological discoveries and historical sites show that the area around Momogaike has a long history stretching back many centuries.
