Shinsekai is a bustling town. Famous tourist spots include Tsutenkaku Tower in the center and Janjan Yokocho in the southeast.
Tsutenkaku Tower is known for its large pufferfish lantern sign, and Janjan Yokocho is full of energy, with about 50 kushikatsu restaurants, doteyaki restaurants, and Go and Shogi clubs lining the street.
The origin of Shinsekai was the 5th National Industrial Exhibition in 1903. On the site, Tennoji Park and Luna Park, a fee-based amusement park, were built, and Tsutenkaku (the first Tsutenkaku Tower) was also constructed.
Shinsekai developed as playhouses and movie theaters were built one after another. Today, Lunapark and the movie theater are closed, but the observation deck of Tsutenkaku Tower is crowded with tourists from far and wide.
At the Tsutenkaku Theater in the basement, active divas sing enka (traditional Japanese ballads) every Monday, and at TENGEKI, manzai and Kamigata rakugo entertain the audience every Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturdays and Sundays, rakugo and manzai performances by Shochiku comedians add to the lively aspect of the theater.
On weekends, Janjan Yokocho is also crowded with tourists, many of whom come to take commemorative photos with Billiken-san and the blowfish lantern sign in the background.
A variety of stores, including kushikatsu (skewered pork cutlet) shops, doteyaki restaurants, and go-shogi (Japanese chess) clubs, line the 130-meter-long street from north to south. Shinsekai is a lively and enjoyable town.
