Nara Kaede no Sato Hirara - Maple Village

A Peaceful Retreat Among Historic Wooden School Buildings and Maples from Around the World

Nara Kaede no Sato Hirara is a unique botanical garden in Uda City, Nara Prefecture, dedicated to the beauty and diversity of maple trees. Often described as Japan’s only full-scale maple botanical garden, it occupies the former Uda Elementary School, a wooden school building constructed in 1935 and closed in 2006. The school has been thoughtfully repurposed, preserving its nostalgic atmosphere and the warmth of its traditional wooden architecture.

Once a place where generations of children studied, the school now welcomes visitors to enjoy its historic buildings alongside a colorful landscape of maple trees. The combination of local history, natural beauty, and a relaxed atmosphere makes Hirara a charming destination for a leisurely outing in the Uda countryside.

A Unique Botanical Garden with Around 1,200 Maple Varieties

The former school grounds are planted with approximately 3,000 maple trees representing around 1,200 varieties collected from Japan and other parts of the world. The collection includes many rare cultivars and is regarded as one of the most extensive of its kind in Japan, earning the garden its reputation as a world maple park.

Maples are best known for their brilliant autumn foliage, but Hirara offers beauty throughout the year. In spring and early summer, fresh leaves emerge in shades of green and other delicate colors, creating a refreshing contrast with the old wooden school buildings. As the seasons change, the trees reveal different textures and hues, inviting visitors to explore the grounds at an unhurried pace.

Whether you visit to admire autumn colors, enjoy the fresh growth of spring, or simply stroll beneath the trees, the garden offers a peaceful way to appreciate the changing seasons.

A Café, Local Souvenirs, and Hands-On Experiences

The former school building has been adapted to accommodate a café, a souvenir corner, and gallery spaces while retaining much of its original character. At Café Kaede, visitors can relax in the nostalgic surroundings and enjoy a break from exploring the garden.

The café’s signature Hirara pancakes are a popular choice. Enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee inside the old wooden school provides a distinctive experience, combining the comfort of a café with the atmosphere of a bygone era.

Reservation-based programs are also available, including activities introducing Japanese culture and experiences inspired by everyday life at an elementary school. These programs offer an enjoyable way for visitors of different ages to engage with local culture. A library area provides a quiet place to read, and maple saplings representing various varieties are available for purchase, allowing visitors to bring home a living reminder of their visit.

Stay Overnight in a Nostalgic Wooden School

In November 2019, a guesthouse opened in the former school complex, giving visitors the opportunity to stay overnight in a building that preserves the atmosphere of the Showa era (1926–1989). The wooden classrooms and nostalgic surroundings offer an unusual alternative to conventional accommodation.

Uda is also known for its beautiful night skies and is sometimes described as a place where the stars seem to fall from the heavens. After dark, visitors can enjoy views of the stars in the clear countryside sky. Staying in a historic school building and photographing the night sky makes for a memorable experience that is difficult to replicate in a city.

A Welcoming Place to Visit at No Cost

Admission to the garden is free, making it easy to include in a sightseeing itinerary around Uda. The historic school building has also served as a filming location for television productions and is a popular spot for photography.

Visitors can admire the maple collection, explore the old school, enjoy refreshments, or simply take a break in the tranquil surroundings. The blend of nature, local history, and the warmth of a carefully preserved school building gives Nara Kaede no Sato Hirara a character all its own.

Discover a Different Side of Nara Prefecture

Nara Kaede no Sato Hirara offers a refreshing alternative to the region’s famous temples and ancient historical sites. Here, the changing colors of maple leaves meet the charm of traditional wooden architecture, creating a welcoming place to slow down and enjoy the countryside.

For travelers exploring Uda City, this distinctive garden is an inviting destination for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, families, and anyone who appreciates historic buildings and peaceful surroundings.
