Nishihama Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Yaeyama Islands, located on the northern coast of Hateruma Island. The beach is about a 10-minute walk from Hateruma Port, making it an easy destination to reach after arriving on the island.
The beach is also sometimes written as “西浜,” meaning “West Beach” in Japanese. However, “nishi” means “north” in the local dialect, reflecting the beach’s location on the northern side of Hateruma Island.
After walking down the slope toward the coast, an extraordinary tropical landscape opens up: brilliant blue-green water and a vast expanse of pure white sand.
The beach stretches for approximately 1 kilometer. The fine sand feels wonderfully soft beneath bare feet, making even a simple walk along the shore a relaxing experience. Lying on the sand and looking out across the ocean is enough to make you feel the peaceful atmosphere of Japan’s southernmost inhabited island.
The emerald-green sea is shallow near the shore, making Nishihama an inviting place for swimming and enjoying the warm tropical water.
The remarkable color of the sea, combined with the fine white sand, creates the kind of scenery that feels almost unreal. It is easy to understand why Nishihama is regarded as one of the signature beaches of the Yaeyama Islands.
Near the pier in the far left section of the beach, the water offers opportunities for snorkeling among coral and tropical fish. This area is particularly appealing to visitors who want to experience the marine environment around Hateruma Island.
However, ocean conditions can change, and the area should be approached with caution when there is a strong swell or rough water.
Nishihama Beach captures the remote and peaceful character of Hateruma Island. Far from the busy atmosphere of Okinawa’s major resort areas, the beach offers a chance to slow down and simply enjoy the sea, sand, and open horizon.
Showers and changing facilities are available, while a shaded area beneath pandanus trees toward the back of the beach provides a pleasant place to rest out of the sun.
The combination of incredibly fine white sand, shallow emerald-green water, and the distinctive tropical scenery of Japan’s southernmost inhabited island makes Nishihama Beach an unforgettable destination.
Whether you swim in the calm shallows, explore the coral reefs, walk barefoot along the soft sand, or simply relax beneath the tropical sun, Nishihama Beach offers an exceptional taste of the natural beauty of the Yaeyama Islands.
