Sekigahara Battlefield

The Site of One of the Most Decisive Battles in Japanese History

The Sekigahara Battlefield is where the famous Battle of Sekigahara took place, pitting the Eastern Army led by Tokugawa Ieyasu against the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari. Today, the former battlefield is surrounded by peaceful rural scenery, with stone monuments and banners bearing the crests of the Tokugawa and Ishida clans marking the site of the fierce confrontation.

At Mount Sasao, where Ishida Mitsunari established his headquarters and commanded the Western Army, reconstructed defensive palisades and a stone monument marking his encampment help visitors imagine the scene of the battle. Other notable locations include Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Final Headquarters, the Maruyama Signal Fire Site, and the site where the fighting began.

Several facilities also bring the history of the battle to life, including the Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, the Sekigahara Town History and Folklore Learning Center, Sasao-yama Exchange Center, and the Sekigahara Station Tourist Information Center.

The Battle of Sekigahara: The Clash That Decided Japan’s Future

The Battle of Sekigahara was fought on October 21, 1600, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Its principal battlefield was in Sekigahara, in what was then Mino Province and is now Sekigahara Town, Fuwa District, Gifu Prefecture.

The conflict arose from political rivalry within the Toyotomi administration following the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Eastern Army, led by Tokugawa Ieyasu, fought against the Western Army, whose nominal commander-in-chief was Mōri Terumoto. Fighting took place at several locations, with Sekigahara becoming the decisive battleground.

The victory enabled Tokugawa Ieyasu to consolidate enormous political power. The governing system established under Hideyoshi, involving the Council of Five Elders and the Board of Five Commissioners, collapsed. Ieyasu’s rise ultimately paved the way for the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate and the political order that characterized the Edo period.
