Sunflower Village

A Golden Landscape Filled with Two Million Sunflowers

Sunflower Village in Hokuryu, Hokkaido, is famous for its spectacular sunflower fields, where approximately two million sunflowers bloom across a vast 23-hectare area. Equivalent to roughly five Tokyo Domes in size, the expansive fields are celebrated as one of Japan’s most impressive sunflower landscapes.

During the main flowering season, from mid-July through late August, the fields are transformed into a sea of brilliant golden yellow. The gently rolling landscape covered with enormous sunflowers is particularly breathtaking on sunny days, when the vivid yellow flowers contrast beautifully with the deep blue Hokkaido sky.

Panoramic Views from the Observation Deck

An observation deck within the sunflower fields provides visitors with sweeping views across the entire landscape. The two-story observation deck near the parking area offers an especially impressive perspective, allowing visitors to appreciate the enormous scale of the sunflower fields from above.

Looking across the gently undulating fields from the elevated viewpoint is one of the best ways to experience the sheer size of Sunflower Village and capture memorable photographs.

Cool Down Beside the Triple Water Wheel

The triple water wheel is another popular feature within the grounds. During the hot summer season, the water wheels turn while sending sparkling sprays of water into the air. The gentle sound of flowing water and the refreshing spray create a pleasant contrast to the brilliant summer sunflowers.

Walk Through a Giant Sunflower Maze

Sunflower Village offers more than scenery. One of its most popular attractions is the Sunflower Maze, a giant maze laid out among the flowers. Wandering through the towering sunflowers turns a simple visit into a fun adventure for families and other visitors.

Another permanent attraction is the “World Sunflower Corner,” where visitors can see approximately 30 different varieties of sunflowers. The variety of flower shapes and colors provides an interesting opportunity to discover that sunflowers come in far more forms than the familiar large yellow blooms.

Summer Events Among the Sunflowers

During the flowering season, the site hosts special events in addition to its regular attractions. Fireworks displays and other special events are held on weekends, adding an exciting festive atmosphere to the summer landscape.

The enormous grounds can also be explored comfortably by rental bicycle or the sightseeing vehicle “Himawari-go.” These options make it easier to enjoy the expansive fields without having to walk the entire area.

Enjoy Local Treats at the Tourist Center

A tourist center within the grounds offers places to eat and shop, providing a convenient break during your visit. One of the specialties worth trying is the sunflower seed soft-serve ice cream, made with sunflower seeds and offering a distinctive local twist on a classic Hokkaido summer treat.

A Spectacular Summer Flower Experience in Hokkaido

Sunflower Village is one of Hokkaido’s most memorable summer flower destinations, combining an immense field of two million sunflowers with panoramic viewpoints, interactive attractions, and seasonal events.

Whether you visit simply to admire the golden landscape, explore the sunflower maze, discover different varieties, or enjoy a refreshing local ice cream, the vast fields offer a quintessential Hokkaido experience. From mid-summer through late August, Sunflower Village becomes a brilliant golden world that is especially beautiful beneath Hokkaido’s wide-open sky.
