Takamine Onsen

A Mountain Hot Spring Above the Clouds

A Secluded Retreat Surrounded by the Silence of Nature

Takamine Onsen is a secluded hot spring destination in Hishidaira, Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture. Located at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters in the Takamine Highlands, the hot spring is surrounded by the pristine natural environment of Joshin’etsukogen National Park.

With clear mountain air, vast highland scenery, and an atmosphere far removed from the noise of cities, Takamine Onsen is an ideal destination for travelers seeking peace and relaxation. There is only one inn here, standing quietly amid the mountains. The inn is also known as the “Lamp Inn” because of its distinctive use of traditional-style lamps to illuminate the interior.

A Gentle Natural Hot Spring

Calcium-Sodium Bicarbonate Spring

The water at Takamine Onsen is classified as a calcium-sodium bicarbonate spring. The water has a smooth, gentle feel and is mildly alkaline.

Bicarbonate hot springs are traditionally associated with cleansing the skin and leaving it feeling smooth and refreshed. The waters are also traditionally enjoyed for relaxation after physical activity, making Takamine Onsen particularly appealing after hiking or trekking in the surrounding mountains.

For visitors who have spent the day exploring the highlands, soaking in the warm waters while surrounded by mountain scenery provides a welcome opportunity to rest both body and mind.

The Long History of Takamine Onsen

Discovery in the Early Meiji Period

The story of Takamine Onsen dates back to the early Meiji period. Local farmers who came into the area around the Fukazawa River to cut grass for livestock are said to have discovered hot water emerging from a crack in the rocks.

This natural spring eventually became the foundation of the hot spring resort that exists today.

The Dream of Building an Inn

In 1902, the first-generation owner, Goto Onkichi, began preparing to build an inn near the source. However, a landslide buried the building while it was under construction, forcing the project to be abandoned for a time.

More than half a century later, in 1954, his son and second-generation owner, Goto Hajime, took up his father’s vision and began drilling for a reliable hot spring source.

His efforts eventually led to the opening of the first Takamine Onsen inn in the valley in 1956.

Reborn in the Takamine Highlands

The inn faced another major setback in 1978, when it was completely destroyed by fire. Five years later, in 1983, the inn was relocated to its present site in the Takamine Highlands and reopened.

In 1994, the inn introduced a lighting style centered around lamps and was renewed as the “Lamp Inn.” The warm glow of the lamps, combined with the surrounding darkness and silence of the mountains, created a distinctive atmosphere that has become one of Takamine Onsen’s defining characteristics.

Open-Air Baths with Views Above the Clouds

The Famous “Unjo-no-Yu”

One of the highlights of Takamine Onsen is its famous open-air bath, “Unjo-no-Yu,” meaning “Bath Above the Clouds.” Located high in the Takamine Highlands, the bath offers expansive views over the landscape below.

On days when weather conditions are favorable, visitors may see a spectacular sea of clouds stretching across the valleys, with distant mountain ranges including the Southern Alps visible beyond.

The open-air bath is available exclusively to overnight guests, allowing them to enjoy a particularly peaceful bathing experience surrounded by the highland landscape.

Bathing Beneath a Star-Filled Sky

After sunset, Takamine Onsen takes on an entirely different character. With very little artificial light in the surrounding mountains, the night sky can appear remarkably clear, revealing countless stars overhead.

Guests can soak in the hot spring while gazing at the stars, listening to the quiet of the mountains. Inside the inn, the gentle glow of lamps provides a warm contrast to the darkness outside, creating an atmospheric experience that is difficult to find in more urban destinations.

Exploring the Takamine Highlands

Takamine Onsen is surrounded by numerous opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The Takamine Highlands offer hiking and trekking routes through beautiful mountain scenery, while Asama 2000 Park provides opportunities for skiing during the winter season.

The surrounding area of Komoro also offers historic and cultural attractions, including Kaikoen Park, museums, historic buildings, and fruit orchards. Depending on the season, visitors can enjoy everything from spring blossoms and fresh greenery to autumn foliage and snowy mountain landscapes.

Getting to Takamine Onsen

Takamine Onsen can be reached by car or public transportation.

From Komoro Station, served by the JR Koumi Line and Shinano Railway, the journey takes approximately 45 minutes by car. From JR Hokuriku Shinkansen Sakudaira Station, it takes approximately 30 minutes by car.

By car, the inn is approximately 40 minutes from the Joshin’etsu Expressway Komoro Interchange.

During winter, heavy snowfall can affect road conditions. Travelers planning a winter visit should check the latest road conditions and confirm transportation or pickup arrangements with the accommodation in advance.

A Rare Mountain Retreat in Nagano

Takamine Onsen is more than simply a place to take a hot spring bath. Its high-altitude setting, dramatic mountain scenery, long history, and distinctive lamp-lit atmosphere combine to create an experience unlike that of a conventional resort.

The inn’s story stretches from the discovery of a natural spring by local farmers in the Meiji era through landslides, fire, relocation, and renewal. Today, that history lives on in a secluded mountain retreat where guests can enjoy hot springs while surrounded by the vast natural landscape of the Takamine Highlands.

A Peaceful Escape Above the Clouds

For travelers wishing to step away from the pace of everyday life, Takamine Onsen offers a rare opportunity to spend time in harmony with the mountains. Relax in the open-air bath, watch clouds drift through the valleys, gaze at the stars after dark, and enjoy the warm glow of lamps inside the inn.

High in the mountains of Nagano, Takamine Onsen offers a quiet and memorable Japanese hot spring experience where nature, history, and traditional hospitality come together above the clouds.
