Tateshina Town is located in the central part of Nagano Prefecture, in Kitasaku District. Surrounded by mountains and highland landscapes, the town combines beautiful nature with historic post-town scenery from the days of the old Nakasendo Road.
The name Tateshina comes from Mount Tateshina, the beautiful mountain rising along the southern edge of the town. The mountain was historically also written as “Tateshina-yama” using a different Japanese character. The modern spelling of Tateshina is partly related to the fact that the character traditionally used for the mountain’s name was not included in the list of characters approved for general use in Japan at the time the current place name was established.
Tateshina has a distinctive north-south shape. The southern part rises into a highland area, while the northern part consists mainly of lower-lying rural communities where approximately 90 percent of the town’s residents live.
The area between these two sections becomes remarkably narrow, giving the town an outline often compared to an hourglass or a gourd. At its narrowest point, in the Amizakai Pass area, the distance across the town is only about 53 meters in a straight line. A snow shelter along the road marks this unusual geographical feature.
National Routes 141 and 254, together with Nagano Prefectural Route 40, pass through the northern part of the town, where the main residential areas are located. In the south, Tateshina borders Chino City and includes the popular Shirakaba Resort area around Lake Shirakaba.
The forested central area contains scattered small settlements, while large stretches of woodland remain largely untouched, preserving the area’s natural character.
Rising to 2,531 meters, Mount Tateshina is a beautiful stratovolcano and one of the defining landmarks of the region. It is also known as Suwa Fuji because of its distinctive appearance.
Several highland lakes are found around the mountain, including Lake Shirakaba and Lake Megami. Their scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, from fresh greenery and clear summer skies to colorful autumn foliage and snow-covered winter landscapes.
Tateshina has considerable differences in elevation and a typical continental climate. Summers are pleasantly cool compared with many lowland areas of Japan, while winters are cold and snowy.
The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures can also be significant. The dry, clear air and comfortable summer temperatures have made the highland area a popular destination for visitors seeking a refreshing escape from the heat.
