The fantastic night sea with “fishing fire,” a summer tradition in Iwami Town
A line of lights stretching across the dark blue Sea of Japan at night. The lights, which are as fantastic as a galactic railroad, are “fishing fires” lit by white squid fishing boats.
From early to mid-summer, the white squids come to shore to spawn, and from near the shore one can see the spectacular sight of the sea surface ablaze from the large fishing fires that are lit nearby. Fishing fires seen from slightly elevated places such as the Higashihama Observatory in the onshore area are also fantastic, and are a spectacular sight in the summer in Iwami Town, where you can lose track of time and watch forever.
