Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa

A Scenic Destination Overlooking Lake Yamba-Aga

Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa is a popular tourist facility in Naganohara Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. Located beside the magnificent Lake Yamba-Aga, it offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains, along with dining, shopping, and sightseeing experiences.

One of the facility’s main attractions is its open lakeside setting combined with a charming retro-modern atmosphere. The building was designed with the former Naganohara Town Hall, constructed in 1929, as its architectural inspiration. Some of the original wooden materials from the former town hall were also reused inside the facility.

The combination of natural scenery and historical design creates a relaxing atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the landscape while experiencing a sense of the area’s past.

Spectacular Views of Yamba’s Natural Landscape

Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa is located at the foot of Mount Maruiwa, overlooking Lake Yamba-Aga and the surrounding mountains. From the garden and nearby park, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the lake and mountains throughout the year.

In spring, fresh green foliage covers the mountains, while summer brings lush greenery. Autumn transforms the landscape with colorful foliage, and winter offers clear air and peaceful views of the quiet lake. Each season provides a different perspective on the natural beauty of the Yamba area.

Departure Point for the Amphibious Bus “Yamba Nyagaten-go”

Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa is also known as the departure point for the popular amphibious bus “Yamba Nyagaten-go”. The vehicle travels on ordinary roads before dramatically entering the lake, creating an exciting sightseeing experience.

Once on the water, passengers can enjoy views that cannot be seen from the surrounding roads. The sparkling emerald-green waters of Lake Yamba-Aga and the mountains surrounding the reservoir create a spectacular panorama.

A Restaurant Serving Local and Popular Japanese Dishes

The on-site restaurant serves a variety of dishes, including udon, soba, curry, and set meals. It is a convenient place to stop for lunch or a meal during a sightseeing or driving trip around the Yamba area.

Among the restaurant’s specialties are the “Maruiwa Curry” and “Splash Curry.” Maruiwa Curry features a generous hamburger steak served on rice arranged to resemble the shape of Mount Maruiwa, making it a distinctive original dish associated with the facility.

Enjoying a meal while looking out over Yamba’s natural scenery adds another memorable element to a visit.

Souvenirs and Yamba-Limited Products

The souvenir shop offers a wide selection of Yamba-area specialties and Gunma souvenirs. Visitors can find gifts and keepsakes that capture the character of the region.

Popular items include limited-edition goods inspired by the amphibious bus Nyagaten-go, such as plush toys and keychains. The shop also sells local foods, including roasted sweet potatoes made from sweet potatoes grown in the area.

Original Sweets at Maruiwa Café

Next to the main facility, Maruiwa Café provides a relaxing place to enjoy the scenery while taking a break. The café is known for original desserts made generously with locally grown sweet potatoes.

Popular options include “Imo-n Mont Blanc Soft” and “Luxury Sweet Potato Shake.” The café also offers colorful original drinks such as the “Yamba Dam Lake Float,” inspired by the beautiful emerald-green color of Lake Yamba-Aga.

Enjoying these sweets and drinks while looking across the lake is a pleasant way to slow down during a sightseeing trip.

A Park and Viewpoints for a Relaxing Break

The area around Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa includes parks and viewpoints where visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery. A lakeside park features swings and has become a popular photo spot for both children and adults.

The second floor of the facility also has a rest area and an exhibition room recreating the mayor’s office from the former Naganohara Town Hall. These exhibits offer an opportunity to learn more about the local history.

From the observation area, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Yamba Dam reservoir and surrounding mountains, providing memorable scenery for photographs and sightseeing.

Mount Maruiwa, the Symbol of Naganohara

Mount Maruiwa, which gives the facility its name, is regarded as one of the symbols of Naganohara Town. Its distinctive rounded shape makes it particularly recognizable from the surrounding area.

The mountain stands at approximately 1,124 meters above sea level and is surrounded on three sides by steep rock faces, giving it an impressive appearance.

The approximately 100-meter-high rock cliff facing the Yamba Dam reservoir is especially striking and can be clearly seen from a distance. Historically, a castle known as Maruiwa Castle is said to have been built on the summit during the Eiroku era, adding another layer of historical interest to the mountain.

Convenient Access for Sightseeing and Road Trips

Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa is approximately 20 minutes by car from Kusatsu Onsen, making it a convenient stop when exploring the northern Gunma region. It is also about 70 minutes by car from the Shibukawa-Ikaho Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway.

The facility has a spacious parking area accommodating approximately 65 passenger cars, three large buses, and 10 motorcycles. It is therefore also a convenient rest stop for sightseeing buses and motorcycle touring.

With its combination of spectacular scenery, local food, shopping, and unique sightseeing experiences, Yamba Lake Station Maruiwa is an enjoyable destination for travelers exploring Lake Yamba-Aga and the surrounding mountains of Gunma.
