Arashiyama Hanatouro was a winter illumination event that transformed the historic Arashiyama and Saga districts of Kyoto into a magical landscape of light. Traditional streets, bamboo groves, riverside scenery, and historic cultural sites were illuminated with approximately 2,500 outdoor lanterns, creating an enchanting atmosphere after dark.
The illuminated route extended through the famous Bamboo Grove Path, between Nonomiya Shrine and Okochi Sanso Garden, as well as around Togetsukyo Bridge, the foothills, and the surrounding waterfront. The event highlighted the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Arashiyama, offering visitors a distinctive way to experience Kyoto in winter.
The Bamboo Grove Path is one of Arashiyama’s most iconic attractions. During Hanatouro, lanterns illuminated the towering bamboo stalks, creating a dreamlike setting of light and shadow. The softly lit pathway offered a different perspective on this famous landscape, which is usually explored during daylight hours.
The route connected Nonomiya Shrine with Okochi Sanso Garden, allowing visitors to enjoy a memorable evening walk through one of Kyoto’s most celebrated natural attractions.
The area around Togetsukyo Bridge, the foothills, and the nearby waterfront also formed part of the illuminated event. The interplay of lantern light, river scenery, and the surrounding mountains created a peaceful winter atmosphere.
These illuminated landscapes showcased the beauty of Arashiyama’s natural surroundings and historic landmarks, making the event particularly appealing to photographers and visitors seeking a memorable evening in Kyoto.
Another highlight was the Ikebana Promenade, organized with the cooperation of the Kyoto Ikebana Association. Large floral arrangements displayed in impressive vessels by leading masters of various ikebana schools decorated the illuminated route.
The combination of traditional Japanese flower arrangement and atmospheric lighting created an elegant outdoor exhibition, celebrating Kyoto’s artistic heritage and the beauty of seasonal nature.
Arashiyama Hanatouro attracted many visitors who came to enjoy the district’s historic temples, shrines, bamboo groves, and riverside scenery in a different light. The event offered a special opportunity to appreciate the area’s cultural landmarks and natural surroundings during the winter season.
Visitors could combine an evening stroll with sightseeing in Arashiyama, exploring its traditional streets and scenic attractions before or after enjoying the illuminated route.
The event was traditionally held in December in the Saga and Arashiyama area of Kyoto. The illuminated walking routes were free to explore, although separate admission fees could apply to individual temples, shrines, and other facilities.
The area can be reached on foot from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, Randen Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Railway, or Hankyu Arashiyama Station.
