Chusen Tenugui Towels

Traditional Tenugui Made with Artisanal Dyeing Techniques

Chusen tenugui are traditionally dyed Japanese hand towels made using the “chusen” dyeing technique, a method unique to Gunma Prefecture within the region’s traditional textile crafts. Patterns are created using hand-carved stencils, after which dye is poured over the fabric to color it.

Chusen is a traditional dyeing technique in which the final result reflects the skill, experience, and intuition of the artisan. Unlike mass-produced, machine-made products, these towels have the warmth and character of handmade craftsmanship.

“Hon-zome” Dyeing That Colors Both Sides of the Fabric

One of the defining characteristics of hon-zome, or traditional whole-cloth dyeing, is that the dye penetrates deeply through both sides of the fabric. Unlike printing or dyeing methods that apply color mainly to the surface, chusen tenugui have beautiful colors and patterns that can also be appreciated from the reverse side.

The subtle variations in color and the distinctive definition of the patterns give chusen tenugui their characteristic handmade appearance. Another appealing feature is that the fabric and colors gradually become softer and more refined with use, developing a richer character over time.

From Traditional Patterns to Original Gunma-Inspired Designs

Chusen tenugui feature not only classic traditional Japanese patterns but also original designs incorporating motifs associated with Gunma.

Some designs feature locomotives or “Gunma-chan,” Gunma Prefecture’s beloved mascot. These designs combine traditional craftsmanship with a friendly, contemporary appeal, making the towels enjoyable as distinctive souvenirs.

A Memorable Souvenir from a Trip to Gunma

Chusen tenugui are a distinctive Gunma souvenir that combines everyday practicality with the appeal of traditional craftsmanship. As the fabric’s texture and colors gradually change through use, owners can enjoy the beauty of artisan-dyed textiles for many years.

In Gunma, original tenugui featuring locomotives and Gunma-chan are also sold at “Gunma Iroha”, located inside JR Takasaki Station. A chusen tenugui makes a wonderful keepsake of a trip to Gunma, whether chosen for yourself or as a gift for someone special.
