Dohara Falls

A Famous Spring of Mt. Chokai Said to Have Two Different Tastes

Dohara Falls is a small but fascinating waterfall in Yuza Town, Yamagata Prefecture. Standing approximately 3 meters high, it is a rare type of waterfall known as a subsurface-flow waterfall, where groundwater emerging from the mountains flows down the slope.

The name “Dohara” is said to come from the way water appears to spring directly from the “dōppara,” a local expression referring to the middle or belly of the body. On the way to the Ichinotaki and Ninotaki Gorge, abundant spring water emerges from a mountainside surrounded by cedar trees, forming a clear stream in the quiet forest.

At the center of the falls is a small shrine dedicated to Fudō Myōō, the Buddhist deity associated with wisdom and protection. Two streams flow down from cracks in the rocks on either side of the sacred figure. Although the waterfall is small, the combination of flowing water, forest, rocks, and religious traditions creates a distinctive and mysterious landscape.

Clear Spring Water Fed by Mt. Chokai

The water of Dohara Falls originates as groundwater from Mt. Chokai. After flowing underground, the water emerges naturally from the mountainside. It is said to contain abundant minerals and has long been valued by people living in the surrounding area.

One of the most unusual features of the spring is the local belief that the water on the right and left sides has different qualities and even different tastes. Some local people prefer to collect water from the right side, while others prefer the left. Some collect both and mix them together in equal proportions before taking the water home.

A Famous Spring That Flows Throughout the Year

Despite being located in a mountainous area that receives heavy snowfall, the spring water at Dohara Falls does not freeze even in winter. People therefore come to collect the water throughout the year, and the spring is widely known as one of Yuza’s notable sources of natural water.

The water is untreated natural spring water and is not sterilized. The spring is carefully preserved in its natural state while continuing to be used by people in the local community.

A Mysterious Waterfall Hidden in a Cedar Forest

The area around Dohara Falls is surrounded by dense stands of cedar trees. Deep within the forest, a small shrine stands between the two streams of the waterfall.

Moss-covered stones are scattered throughout the area, and several stone Buddhist figures can also be found among the trees. The sound of flowing water echoes quietly through the forest, while green-covered rocks and stone statues create an atmosphere that feels serene, spiritual, and almost otherworldly.

A Sacred Spring Worshipped Alongside Fudō Myōō

Dohara Falls has long been valued not simply as a natural attraction but also as a place of religious devotion. A statue or shrine dedicated to Fudō Myōō stands between the two streams, where the clear spring water continues to flow.

Information displayed at the site describes the water as being beneficial to the body, and local tradition also associates the site with prayers for safe childbirth. The area offers a glimpse into the way natural springs and religious beliefs have become intertwined in the mountain communities of Japan.

Yamagata’s First Satoyama Environmental Conservation Area

The area surrounding Dohara Falls has been designated as Yamagata Prefecture’s first Satoyama Environmental Conservation Area because of its valuable natural environment.

The cedar forest, moss-covered stones, clear spring water, and other elements of the mountain landscape have been carefully preserved. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful walk through the forest while experiencing the scenery created by the underground waters of Mt. Chokai.

How to Reach Dohara Falls

Dohara Falls is located approximately 7.5 kilometers east of Yuza Station. From the area around Yuza Town Hall, follow Prefectural Route 60 along the Gekkogawa River for approximately 7 kilometers. After passing the Inland Fisheries Center, continue for about 400 meters to find a parking area on the left.

The parking area can accommodate approximately five large vehicles. From there, it takes about five minutes on foot through the forest to reach the waterfall. As you walk beneath the cedar trees, the sound of flowing water gradually becomes audible, building anticipation as you approach the falls.

Two Streams Appearing Deep in the Forest

From the information board, follow the path approximately 100 meters to the right through the forest to reach Dohara Falls. The small shrine surrounded by trees soon comes into view, with two streams flowing down on either side.

Rather than the dramatic spectacle of a large waterfall, Dohara Falls offers a quiet and intimate experience. Visitors can take their time observing the forest, stone Buddhist figures, moss-covered rocks, and crystal-clear water while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Experience the Nature of Mt. Chokai from Early Summer Through Winter

Dohara Falls offers different scenery throughout the year. During the fresh-green season, the cedar forest and surrounding trees become covered in vibrant foliage, while in summer the refreshing sound of flowing water creates a cool and peaceful atmosphere beneath the trees.

In winter, the surrounding forest is covered in snow, yet the spring water continues to flow without freezing. The sight of clear water emerging quietly amid the snow is a particularly distinctive scene at Dohara Falls, reflecting the unique natural environment of this snowy region.

A Famous Spring Where You Can Feel the Blessings of Mt. Chokai

Dohara Falls is one of Yuza’s notable natural spring sites, where groundwater from Mt. Chokai emerges from the mountainside to create a clear and tranquil flow.

The local belief that the water tastes different on the two sides of the falls adds an unusual and memorable element to the experience. At the same time, the Fudō Myōō shrine, stone Buddhist figures, cedar forest, moss-covered rocks, and clear spring water create an atmosphere where nature and spirituality exist side by side.

The spring continues to flow throughout the year without freezing, attracting local residents and visitors who come to collect its water. The journey through the forest, accompanied by the sound of the stream, is itself part of the experience.

Dohara Falls offers a peaceful opportunity to experience the natural blessings of Mt. Chokai together with the faith and traditions that have developed around its pure mountain water.
