Karaage Soba: Fried Chicken Soba

A Famous Local Dish at Abiko Station

Enjoy a Giant Fried Chicken Topping on the Station Platform

Karaage soba is a famous local specialty served at Yayoi-ken, a standing soba restaurant located on the platforms of JR Abiko Station in Chiba Prefecture. The dish is known for its surprisingly large portion, affordable price, and enormous piece of Japanese-style fried chicken placed on top of a bowl of soba noodles.

Its generous size has made it so popular that some travelers even make a special stop at Abiko Station just to try it. For visitors exploring Chiba by train, karaage soba offers a memorable opportunity to experience a uniquely Japanese station-food culture.

The History of Yayoi-ken

Yayoi-ken was established in April 1928 and originally operated as a station bento shop at Abiko Station. In 1967, the business began serving standing soba and udon, and it eventually expanded to four locations at Abiko Station and nearby Tennodai Station.

A Giant Piece of Karaage

The restaurant’s best-known menu item is its karaage soba. The fried chicken placed on top of the noodles is remarkably large, measuring around 15 centimeters across. The size of the karaage gradually increased after the dish was introduced around 1990, helping it become Yayoi-ken’s signature specialty.

The karaage can also be ordered separately. Outside the summer season, it is generally available for takeout as well. The restaurant sells approximately 1,500 to 2,000 pieces of karaage per day, demonstrating the enduring popularity of this unusual station-food specialty.

A Familiar Sight on the Station Platform

Because the restaurant can become crowded, it is not unusual to see customers standing on the station platform with bowls in hand, enjoying their karaage soba. This has become a familiar scene at Abiko Station, and some visitors come to the station specifically to try the famous dish.

Also Known as “Genkotsu Soba”

Among railway enthusiasts, karaage soba at Abiko Station is also known as “Genkotsu Soba,” a nickname referring to the huge, fist-sized appearance of the fried chicken.

Hot or Cold Soba with Karaage

Originally, the karaage was generally served with hot soba or udon. Since around 2010, however, customers have also been able to order the karaage with cold soba or udon during the summer. This gives visitors another way to enjoy the dish while traveling through Chiba.
