Gunkanjima (Battleship Island)

A vast ruin that flourished as a coal mining town

Hashima Island, commonly known as “Gunkanjima,” was the site of coal mining operations from the 1800s.
The island prospered to the extent that a movie theater, hospital, and other facilities were built on the island, as well as reinforced concrete apartments for the workers. However, excavation work ceased when the main energy source was switched to oil, and the island has been uninhabited since then.

Today, several companies offer cruise tours to the island, which is known as a tourist spot.

The former residential area can be seen from the boat, and once ashore, the remains of mines and apartments can be seen up close.
The contrast between the ruined town with its rows of decaying buildings and the living vegetation is beautiful.

Gunkanjima Concierge, which organizes the tours, also operates a museum, where visitors can experience a simulated landing on the island, which is reproduced in diorama and computer graphics.
