Hamahotaru (Firefly Squid)

A Springtime Treasure from the Sea of Hamasaka

Hamahotaru is a local specialty made from fresh firefly squid landed in Hamasaka, a coastal area of northern Hyogo Prefecture known for its substantial firefly squid catches. The squid are packed fresh soon after being brought ashore, allowing consumers to enjoy their delicate flavor and freshness.

Preserving the Freshness of Firefly Squid

Firefly squid are highly perishable, so they are often boiled shortly after being caught before being shipped to market. To help more people enjoy the squid in a fresher form, including consumers in major cities, the Hamasaka Fisheries Cooperative began shipping a product called Hamahotaru. The name evokes the tiny lights of fireflies and the squid’s distinctive beauty in the sea.

Hamahotaru shipments become especially active from mid to late March, when the spring fishing season brings these prized squid to the coast. The product offers a way to experience one of Hamasaka’s best-known seafood specialties while preserving the squid’s delicate character.

How to Enjoy Firefly Squid

Fresh firefly squid can be enjoyed in a variety of traditional Japanese dishes. Popular preparations include serving them with vinegared miso sauce, simmering them in a savory broth, stir-frying them, or making nuta, a dish of seafood or vegetables dressed with miso and vinegar. These preparations bring out the squid’s distinctive umami and make the most of its seasonal freshness.

The Taste of Spring in Northern Hyogo

The main season for firefly squid runs from February through May, with March and April being particularly associated with this springtime delicacy. When visiting the Hamasaka area, try local firefly squid dishes to discover the flavors of the Sea of Japan and experience a seafood tradition closely tied to the changing seasons.
