Tendaki Waterfall

A Magnificent Waterfall Cascading from the Heavens

Tendaki Waterfall, located in Oya Town, Yabu City, Hyogo Prefecture, is one of the largest waterfalls in the prefecture, with an impressive drop of 98 meters. Its majestic appearance has earned it a reputation as a waterfall pouring down from the heavens. Situated approximately 33 kilometers east of Mount Hyonosen, the waterfall is also associated with legends about Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon school of Buddhism. It gained wider recognition when it appeared in the opening sequence of the NHK television drama series Futarikko in 1996.

The Natural Beauty of Tendaki Gorge

A Forested Valley Rich in Nature

Tendaki Gorge was carved by the Tendaki River, which originates near Mount Hyonosen, the highest mountain in Hyogo Prefecture. The gorge forms part of the Hyonosen-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park and is surrounded by extensive natural forests. It has also been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Forest Bathing Sites, making it an ideal destination for enjoying fresh air, lush greenery, and the calming atmosphere of the forest.

A Scenic Hiking Trail to the Waterfall

From the parking area at the entrance to Tendaki Gorge, visitors can follow a mountain trail alongside a clear stream for approximately 1.2 kilometers. The climb takes about 45 minutes one way, with the spectacular 98-meter waterfall appearing at the end of the route. Along the way, hikers can discover several smaller waterfalls, including Meoto Falls, Tsutsumigataki Falls, and Itodaki Falls.

The gorge offers a different experience in every season. Spring brings fresh green leaves, autumn transforms the surrounding forest with colorful foliage, and during severe winter cold, the waterfall may partially freeze, creating a striking icy landscape.

The Formation and History of Tendaki Waterfall

Tendaki Waterfall was formed through geological processes involving lava from the eruption of Todoro Volcano approximately 2.5 million years ago. Over a long period, erosion carved the lava plateau into the dramatic landscape visible today.

The waterfall’s impressive scale, together with its natural surroundings and legends associated with Kobo Daishi, has contributed to its recognition as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. It is also counted among the three famous waterfalls of the Tajima region.

Other Waterfalls Along the Gorge

The surrounding valley contains several smaller waterfalls, each with its own distinctive character. Shinobidaki is known for its quiet, graceful appearance, while Iwama Falls rushes through a narrow gap between rocks. Itodaki Falls descends in a delicate, threadlike stream, and Renri Falls features two streams that merge into one.

Kuon Falls evokes a sense of endless flow, while Meoto Falls is notable for its two streams running side by side. At Tsutsumigataki Falls, the sound of water striking the rocks resembles the rhythmic beat of a traditional Japanese drum.
