Spring Water Quality and Characteristics

Kasumi Onsen’s spring water is classified as low-tonicity, mildly alkaline, and low-temperature, with natural spring temperatures ranging from approximately 26°C to 35°C. The gentle properties of the water make it suitable for a relaxing soak after a day of sightseeing, helping visitors unwind and recover from everyday fatigue.

Traditional Uses and Benefits of the Hot Springs

Kasumi Onsen is associated with the general benefits commonly attributed to hot spring bathing. These include relief from neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, bruising, and sensitivity to cold. Its mildly alkaline water is also said to help remove old skin cells, leaving the skin feeling smooth and refreshed.

These benefits reflect traditional hot spring classifications and should not be regarded as a substitute for medical treatment.

A Coastal Hot Spring Destination

Kasumi Onsen lies inland from the scenic Kasumi Coast, an area celebrated for its dramatic coastline and beautiful views of the Sea of Japan. The region is particularly famous in winter for Matsuba crab, a prized snow crab caught in the Sea of Japan and enjoyed as a seasonal delicacy throughout Japan.

The area is also known for its striking sunsets, the lights of fishing boats offshore, and the delicate beauty of daylilies. More than 14 accommodation facilities in the wider area offer hot spring bathing, giving visitors opportunities to relax after exploring the coast and sampling local cuisine.

Unlike a compact hot spring town with a central street lined with inns, Kasumi’s accommodation facilities are spread over a broad area, mainly around Kasumi Port. Visitors can enjoy the hot springs at individual hotels and inns while exploring the surrounding coastal communities.

The Kasumi Onsenkyo Hot Spring Region

Kasumi Onsen is part of Kasumi Onsenkyo, a regional grouping of several hot spring areas: Kasumi Yada River Onsen, Amarube Onsen, Shibayama Onsen, and Sazu Onsen, together with Kasumi Onsen itself. These springs are distributed across the wider region, and each has its own water characteristics and bathing experience.

History and Development

Kasumi Onsen has a relatively recent history, with hot spring use beginning in 1979. A new source was developed in 2008, and the spring water now flows at a rate of approximately 230 liters per minute. This supply has helped support local accommodation facilities and strengthened the area’s appeal as a hot spring destination.

Things to See and Do Around Kasumi Onsen

The surrounding area offers a variety of attractions for visitors. From Kasumi Port, sightseeing boats cruise along the Kasumi Coast, revealing rugged rock formations and dramatic sea views. Other popular destinations include Imajo Point, Okami Park, and Daijoji Temple, known for its cultural heritage.

The nearby Amarube Bridge, a striking railway bridge spanning a deep valley near the Sea of Japan, is another memorable landmark. In summer, visitors can enjoy swimming and relaxing along the region’s beaches.
