A Hot Spring Retreat Famous for Fresh Seafood from the Sea of Japan

Hamasaka Onsenkyo is a hot spring area in Shinonsen Town, Mikata District, Hyogo Prefecture. Located in the historic Tajima region, it consists of three hot spring areas: Shichikama Onsen, Futsukaichi Onsen, and Hamasaka Onsen. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and blessed with abundant thermal water, the resort is popular with both local residents and visitors seeking relaxation, regional cuisine, and a taste of traditional hot spring culture.

History and Background

Japan’s First Energy-Saving Model Project

In 1971, Hamasaka Onsenkyo was selected as the first project under a national energy-saving model initiative. The program aimed to make effective use of local natural resources and promote more efficient energy consumption. The hot spring area’s abundant thermal energy made it a notable example of how natural resources could contribute to regional development.

Designation as a National Health Resort Hot Spring Area

On April 16, 1991, Hamasaka Onsenkyo was designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring Area through Environment Agency Notification No. 22. This designation recognized its value as a place for relaxation and recuperation and helped establish its reputation as a destination for visitors from across Japan.

Features of Hamasaka Onsenkyo

Abundant Hot Spring Water

JR Hamasaka Station on the San-in Main Line is the main railway station serving the area. The hot spring sources are centrally managed, ensuring a plentiful supply of thermal water. In addition to supplying inns and public bathing facilities, the system distributes hot spring water directly to ordinary households.

Hamasaka Onsenkyo is particularly known for the large number of homes receiving hot spring water, a feature that reflects how deeply the springs are woven into everyday life in the community.

Fresh Seafood and Regional Cuisine

Nearby Hamasaka Fishing Port is renowned for its landings of firefly squid, known in Japanese as hotaru-ika. The area is also famous for snow crab, locally called Matsuba-gani. Many inns serve seasonal dishes prepared with fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, making local cuisine an important part of the hot spring experience.

Depending on the season, visitors can enjoy the delicate flavor of firefly squid or savor the rich sweetness of snow crab. A stay in Hamasaka is an excellent opportunity to combine hot spring bathing with the distinctive seafood culture of northern Hyogo.

The Three Hot Spring Areas

Shichikama Onsen

Shichikama Onsen is known for its sulfate spring water, with a source temperature of approximately 49°C. Set in a peaceful natural environment, it offers a relaxing retreat for visitors who want to enjoy the area’s hot springs away from busy urban surroundings.

Futsukaichi Onsen also features sulfate spring water, with a source temperature of approximately 44°C. Its relatively moderate source temperature is one of its distinguishing characteristics, and the spring has long been enjoyed by people seeking a soothing bathing experience.

Hamasaka Onsen

Hamasaka Onsen is a chloride spring with a source temperature of approximately 76°C. Its high-temperature thermal water is a defining feature of the area. The spring attracts repeat visitors who come to enjoy its distinctive bathing experience and the welcoming atmosphere of the coastal town.

Public Bathing Facilities

Visitors can enjoy the hot springs at several public bathing facilities throughout Hamasaka Onsenkyo. These include Matsu no Yu, Utopia Hamasaka, and Shichikama Onsen Yurakukan. Open to both residents and tourists, these facilities provide an accessible way to experience the local thermal waters without staying overnight at an inn.
