Joyama Park (Katori City)

A Scenic Park of Cherry Blossoms and History

Joyama Park is a scenic park located in the Omigawa area of Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. Known as a popular spot for cherry blossoms and azaleas, the park offers beautiful seasonal scenery throughout the year.

Set on the Shimosa Plateau, the park combines lush natural surroundings with historical sites and archaeological remains. Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through the greenery, admire colorful flowers, and take in panoramic views of the Omigawa town area and the surrounding landscape.

A Park Where Nature and History Come Together

Joyama Park stretches across the Shimosa Plateau and contains numerous cherry trees and azaleas. In spring, these flowers bloom in succession, creating a colorful landscape that attracts many visitors.

One of the highlights of the spring season is the Sakura and Azalea Festival, generally held from late March to early May. During this period, the park becomes a lively destination for people who come to enjoy the flowers and the pleasant spring weather.

Panoramic Views from the Park

Located on elevated ground, Joyama Park provides excellent views over the Omigawa urban area. On clear days, visitors can also see toward Kashima and Kamisu in neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture.

One particularly interesting view includes the Omigawa Bridge crossing the Kurobe River, with the Kashima coastal industrial area visible beyond it. The combination of the river, bridge, town, and distant industrial landscape creates a distinctive panorama that can be enjoyed from the park’s higher elevations.

Seifuso: A Traditional Japanese Building

Within Joyama Park stands Seifuso, a traditional Japanese-style building surrounded by a quiet natural environment. The building can be rented for a fee and provides a setting where visitors can appreciate the atmosphere of traditional Japanese architecture.

Surrounded by seasonal scenery, Seifuso offers an elegant space for special events and gatherings. Its traditional design and peaceful surroundings make it a place where visitors can experience a sense of Japanese aesthetics and tranquility.

Historic Sites within Joyama Park

Joyama Park is also notable for its archaeological and historical heritage. The grounds contain the Joyama Kofun Burial Mounds, as well as the remains of Omigawa Castle.

Joyama Kofun Burial Mounds

The Joyama Kofun Group consists of several ancient burial mounds scattered throughout the park. These archaeological remains offer a glimpse into the distant past and add a historical dimension to the park’s natural surroundings.

Walking through the quiet wooded areas while imagining how people lived in ancient Japan can be a fascinating experience. For visitors interested in Japanese archaeology and ancient history, the burial mounds are one of the park’s distinctive attractions.

Remains of Omigawa Castle

The park also contains the remains of Omigawa Castle, which is traditionally said to have been built in 1199 by Awaihara Tomohide. Although the original castle buildings no longer remain, parts of the former defensive layout can still be seen.

Features such as earthen walls, dry moats, earthen bridges, and castle enclosures remain on the site. These traces help visitors imagine the appearance and defensive structure of a medieval Japanese castle.
