Suigo Sawara Iris Park is a municipal botanical garden located in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. Situated at the gateway to the Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, it is one of the area’s best-known tourist attractions and offers visitors beautiful flowers, waterways, and traditional Japanese cultural experiences throughout the year.
The park covers approximately 8 hectares and takes advantage of the unique landscape of the Suigo area, a region historically characterized by rivers, waterways, wetlands, and rice fields. Visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers such as irises, Japanese iris, lotus, wisteria, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and autumn foliage.
One of the park’s most distinctive experiences is a boat ride through the flower gardens. During the famous Iris Festival in early summer, visitors can travel along the waterways in a small traditional boat while viewing fields of colorful Japanese irises from the water.
The park first opened in 1969 as the Sawara Municipal Aquatic Plant Garden. Following the establishment of Katori City, it was renamed Suigo Sawara Aquatic Plant Garden.
In 2017, after extensive redevelopment, the facility was renamed Suigo Sawara Iris Park. The renovation created a more attractive space where visitors can enjoy not only flowers but also family activities, waterways, cultural events, and seasonal scenery.
The park is located near the historic town of Sawara, which prospered during the Edo period as an important center of commerce along the Tone River water transportation network.

One of the most memorable sights is the bridal boat ceremony. A bride and groom travel by boat through the waterways surrounded by blooming irises, creating a uniquely Japanese wedding scene.
Visitors can also hear performances of Sawara-bayashi, traditional festival music associated with Sawara’s famous festivals.
From July through August, the park’s Lotus Corridor becomes a major attraction. Approximately 300 varieties of lotus are cultivated here, giving the park one of the largest collections of lotus varieties in Japan.
Among the remarkable varieties are the Oga Lotus, which was grown from seeds dating back approximately 2,000 years, and the Senbenren, a rare lotus known for having more than 1,000 petals.
Lotus flowers open in the early morning, and the quiet atmosphere of the garden at this time of day provides a particularly beautiful experience.
In early May, visitors can enjoy the Wisteria Tunnel near the entrance to the park. The tunnel stretches for approximately 70 meters and becomes covered with clusters of blooming wisteria.
Known locally as a “Path of Happiness,” the tunnel creates a romantic setting filled with the fragrance and soft colors of wisteria. Additional wisteria trellises can be found throughout the park.
A boat ride is one of the experiences that makes Suigo Sawara Iris Park particularly special. Visitors can board a small traditional-style boat called a Sappa-bune and travel slowly along the park’s waterways.
From the boat, flowers such as Japanese irises and lotus can be viewed at almost water level. The gentle movement of the boat and the surrounding flowers create a peaceful and distinctly Japanese atmosphere.
Boat rides generally operate from April through October, although services may be suspended during heavy rain or strong winds.
Yui-no-shima, or “Island of Connection,” is another special area within the park. During the Iris Festival, traditional Shinto wedding ceremonies may be held here with priests from Katori Jingu Shrine.
Surrounded by blooming Japanese irises, the bride and groom can be seen participating in a traditional ceremony. The island’s name reflects the idea of connecting two people in marriage.
Suigo Sawara Iris Park offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Plum and cherry blossoms add color to the garden in spring, while maple and ginkgo trees create vivid autumn scenery.
During winter, visitors can enjoy trees and plants bearing flowers or colorful fruits. Because the appearance of the park changes with the seasons, each visit offers a different atmosphere.
The Forest Playground is a popular area for families with children. It features large play equipment inspired by Japanese irises, as well as a Tarzan rope and other outdoor attractions.

Visitors traveling with dogs can use the park’s approximately 600-square-meter grassy dog run. Facilities include a drinking-water station and an area where dogs can have their paws washed after playing.
The usage fee is 200 yen per dog per visit, making it a convenient option for travelers exploring the area with their pets.
The Administration Building is located near the entrance and houses the ticket counter and information facilities. Staff can provide visitors with guidance to help them make the most of their time in the park.
The park also has a shop building and Cafe Iris, where visitors can purchase souvenirs, snacks, and refreshments.
During the Iris Festival, the shops offer a variety of souvenirs and light meals, making them convenient places to stop after exploring the flower gardens.
From Junibashi Station on the JR East Narita Line, the park is approximately a 35-minute walk.
Another option is to take a highway bus from Tokyo Station and get off at the Suigo Sawara Iris Park Entrance bus stop.
During the Iris Festival in June, temporary shuttle buses operate from Sawara Station, providing additional convenience for visitors arriving by train.
By car, the park is approximately 20 minutes from the Sawara-Katori Interchange on the Higashi-Kanto Expressway and approximately 25 minutes from the Daiei Interchange.
The park has parking for approximately 500 vehicles, and parking is available free of charge.
