Matsusaka Horumon is a popular local specialty from Matsusaka City in Mie Prefecture, offering a delicious and affordable way to enjoy the region’s celebrated beef culture. While Matsusaka is internationally renowned for its premium Matsusaka beef, grilled horumon—beef offal—is another local favorite well worth discovering.
Matsusaka beef traditionally refers to Japanese Black cattle raised in Matsusaka City and surrounding areas, specifically females that have never given birth. Local yakiniku restaurants also source fresh offal and prepare it with their own seasonings, often using distinctive homemade miso-based sauces. This style of grilled offal has become known as Matsusaka Horumon.
Initially, Matsusaka Horumon was available at only a limited number of yakiniku restaurants in the city. Because it offered plenty of flavor at a lower price than Matsusaka beef yakiniku, its popularity gradually spread. Today, around 15 restaurants in Matsusaka are said to serve this local specialty.
Many establishments grill the offal over charcoal, creating a wonderfully smoky aroma. As the meat cooks, its rich fat combines with the miso sauce, producing a savory fragrance and deep, satisfying flavor. The slightly charred sauce adds another layer of taste, making Matsusaka Horumon an excellent accompaniment to beer or a bowl of steamed rice.
Matsusaka Horumon showcases a different side of the city’s meat culture, pairing fresh ingredients with bold seasoning and traditional grilling techniques. Whether enjoyed as a casual meal with friends or as part of a yakiniku feast, this affordable specialty offers a memorable taste of Matsusaka beyond its world-famous beef steaks.
