Saiku Historical Museum

Discover the History of Saiku and Its Role in the Ise Shrine Tradition

A Museum Dedicated to the Ancient Saiku Site

The Saiku Historical Museum stands within the Saiku archaeological site, which is designated as a National Historic Site of Japan. This specialist museum explores the history and culture of Saiku through permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and audiovisual presentations.

Saiku was the palace complex where the Saio, an unmarried female member of the imperial family, resided while serving Ise Grand Shrine. From ancient times through the medieval period, the Saio performed important religious duties on behalf of the emperor, making Saiku a significant center of imperial ritual and Shinto tradition.

Explore the World of the Saio

The museum uses historical materials, detailed models, and visual displays to explain what Saiku was like and how the Saio fulfilled her ceremonial responsibilities. Its exhibits help visitors understand the lives of these imperial women and the religious and political importance of their role.

Highlights include a reconstruction of the palanquin used by the Saio, a special visual presentation recreating Shinto ceremonies, and displays introducing archaeological discoveries made at the Saiku site. These exhibits offer insights into a distinctive chapter of Japanese history that is difficult to experience elsewhere.

Experience the Saio’s Journey from the Capital to Ise

The museum’s video exhibition room features a presentation about the Saio Gunko, the formal procession in which the Saio traveled from the imperial capital to Ise. Through these audiovisual displays, visitors can learn about the journey and gain a clearer impression of the historical landscape and travel conditions of the period.

Together, the museum’s historical artifacts, models, and films bring the ancient Saiku complex to life and help explain its close connection with Ise Grand Shrine.

Continue Your Journey into Heian-Era Culture

Near the museum is the Itsukinomiya Historical Experience Hall, where visitors can learn about history and traditional culture through hands-on activities. Programs include trying on court clothing such as the elaborate twelve-layered kimono known as jūnihitoe, playing games enjoyed by Heian-period aristocrats, plant dyeing, and weaving.

The experience hall’s wooden buildings are modeled on shinden-zukuri, the residential architectural style of the aristocracy, and the structures of ancient government offices. Traditional construction techniques, including methods that avoid the use of nails, help make the buildings themselves part of the historical experience.

Discover the Heritage of Ancient Ise

A visit to the Saiku Historical Museum provides a deeper understanding of the Saio, the religious traditions of Ise, and the archaeological remains of this important historical center. Combined with the nearby Itsukinomiya Historical Experience Hall, it offers an engaging way to explore the culture, architecture, and ceremonial life of Japan’s Heian period.
