Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, along with Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture.
Since the Edo period (1603-1867), it has been famous as one of the most scenic spots in Japan, and even the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho (1522-1616) included a visit to Matsushima as one of the objectives of his “Okunohosomichi” (Travels in the Countryside).
Matsushima Bay is said to have eight hundred and eight islands, but the actual number of islands is about 260. The sight of islands dotted with pine trees floating in the calm sea is a sight that can only be seen in Matsushima.
The view from the sea on a sightseeing boat or from the observatory is also recommended.
There is “Saigyo-returned Pine Park” located on a hill 5 minutes by car from Matsushima-kaigan Station, and “Matsushima Shidai-kan”, an observation deck surrounding Matsushima Bay.
