Miyatojima Island

Discover the Beauty of Oku-Matsushima

Miyatojima Island is the largest island in Matsushima Bay, located in Higashi-Matsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. Covering approximately 7.4 square kilometers with a coastline of about 12 kilometers, the island is home to around 1,200 residents.

Because Miyatojima lies deep within Matsushima Bay, the surrounding area is known as “Oku-Matsushima,” meaning “Inner Matsushima.” While the central Matsushima area is famous for its many scenic islands, Oku-Matsushima offers a quieter atmosphere surrounded by mountains, forests, and rugged coastlines.

The island is home to some of the region’s most impressive viewpoints, including Mount Otakamori and the dramatic coastal scenery of Sagakei Gorge. It also has important archaeological sites dating back to the Jomon period, as well as remains connected with World War II.

Visitors can also stay at local inns and guesthouses and enjoy fresh seafood caught in the surrounding waters. With its combination of spectacular scenery, history, outdoor activities, and local cuisine, Miyatojima is an ideal destination for travelers looking to experience a quieter side of Matsushima.

Geography and Climate of Miyatojima

Location and Natural Features

Miyatojima lies between Matsushima Bay, an inlet of Sendai Bay, and Ishinomaki Bay. The island is connected to Honshu, Japan’s main island, by the Matsugashima Bridge.

Matsugashima Bridge carries Miyagi Prefectural Route 27, the Oku-Matsushima-Matsushima Park Line, allowing visitors to reach the island easily by car.

To the southwest, Miyatojima faces Kanzazawa Island in the Urato Islands. The two islands are separated by the narrow Wanikabuchi Strait, which is only about 80 meters wide.

A Mild Climate and Diverse Vegetation

Miyatojima has a relatively mild climate, creating an unusual natural environment where plants associated with both warmer and colder regions can coexist.

Much of the island is mountainous, with relatively little flat land. Its winding coastline, however, creates a rich variety of landscapes, from sheltered bays to rocky shores, making the island particularly attractive to nature lovers.

Top Attractions on Miyatojima

Mount Otakamori — “Magnificent View” of the Four Great Views of Matsushima

Mount Otakamori is the highest point on Miyatojima, standing approximately 106 meters above sea level. It is one of the most famous viewpoints in the Oku-Matsushima area.

From the summit, visitors can enjoy a broad panorama of Matsushima Bay, Ishinomaki Bay, the Oshika Peninsula, the Zao Mountains, and Mount Kurikoma.

Otakamori is one of the Four Great Views of Matsushima, where it is known as “Sokan,” meaning “Magnificent View.” The trail to the summit is well maintained, and the relatively short climb can be enjoyed as an easy hike, even by visitors who are not experienced mountaineers.

The panoramic view from the summit is an excellent way to appreciate the complex geography of Matsushima and the surrounding coastline.

Sagakei Gorge — One of Japan’s Three Great Gorges

Located at the southeastern tip of Miyatojima, Sagakei Gorge is a famous scenic area known for its rugged cliffs and unusual rock formations. It is traditionally counted among the Three Great Gorges of Japan.

The coastline features dramatic cliffs and strangely shaped rocks, including formations known as Megane-jima, or “Glasses Island,” and Kaeru-jima, or “Frog Island.” These natural formations have been sculpted over time by the powerful forces of the sea and weather.

One of the best ways to appreciate Sagakei is from the water. Sightseeing boats allow visitors to view the cliffs from the sea, offering an impressive perspective that cannot be experienced from land.

Inagasaki Park and the Beaches

Inagasaki Park offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, while the island’s beaches are known for their clear waters. During summer, the beaches attract many visitors looking to enjoy the seaside environment.

The area is suitable for families, groups, and travelers seeking a relaxing outdoor experience. The combination of the sea, greenery, and open spaces provides an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the natural surroundings.

The Historical Heritage of Miyatojima

Satohama Shell Mound and the Jomon Period

Miyatojima has evidence of human habitation dating back to the Jomon period, a prehistoric era of Japanese history that lasted for thousands of years.

The most important archaeological site is the Satohama Shell Mound, one of the large-scale Jomon archaeological sites in Japan. In 1918, the remains of 14 Jomon-period individuals were discovered here, followed by numerous pottery fragments and other archaeological artifacts.

Research into the pottery excavated from Miyatojima led to the development of what is known as the “Miyatojima chronology,” a system for studying the dates and development of Jomon pottery. This research has had a significant influence on Japanese archaeology.

Today, Satohama Shell Mound is designated as a National Historic Site of Japan. Research findings from archaeological investigations, including those conducted by regional historical research institutions, have been made available to the public.

World War II Remains

Miyatojima also preserves remains connected with World War II. Among them are the remains of a base for “Shinyo” special attack boats, small explosive boats developed by the Japanese military during the war.

Some of the storage tunnels used to shelter these boats still remain. Today, these wartime remains provide an opportunity to learn about the history and human cost of war and can serve as valuable sites for peace education.

How to Get to Miyatojima

By Land

Miyatojima can be reached by car via Miyagi Prefectural Route 27, the Oku-Matsushima-Matsushima Park Line.

The nearest railway station is Nobiru Station on the JR Senseki Line. From the station, taking a taxi is a convenient option.

There are currently no regular local bus services operating around the island, so cars, taxis, and rental bicycles are practical ways to explore the area.

Rental bicycles are available at facilities including Higashi-Matsushima Eat Plaza and Selco Home Aomina.

By Sea

Visitors can also reach the area by sightseeing boat from Matsushima Port. Approaching the island from the sea provides a completely different perspective of Matsushima’s scenic coastline.

It is also possible to visit by pleasure boat. The departure area for sightseeing cruises around Sagakei includes a free parking area and an information facility.

Local Seafood and Accommodation

Miyatojima has a number of family-run guesthouses and traditional inns where visitors can enjoy locally caught seafood.

The surrounding waters are particularly known for seasonal seafood, including oysters and scallops. For travelers who enjoy Japanese cuisine, staying overnight provides an opportunity to experience freshly prepared seafood while enjoying the island’s peaceful atmosphere.

The warm hospitality and homelike atmosphere of the local accommodations are also part of the charm of traveling in Oku-Matsushima.

A Peaceful Side of Matsushima

Miyatojima Island offers a different experience from the more widely visited central area of Matsushima. As the largest island in Matsushima Bay, it combines mountains, forests, rugged coastlines, spectacular viewpoints, archaeological sites, wartime heritage, and fresh local seafood.

At Mount Otakamori, visitors can admire one of the famous panoramic views of Matsushima. At Sagakei Gorge, dramatic cliffs and unusual rock formations reveal the power of nature. Meanwhile, the Satohama Shell Mound provides a glimpse into life thousands of years ago, while the World War II remains offer an opportunity to reflect on more recent history.

With its changing scenery throughout the seasons and its slower pace of life, Miyatojima is an appealing destination for travelers who want to explore the quieter, more natural side of Matsushima.

Take your time, explore the island’s scenic trails and coastline, discover its layers of history, and enjoy the seafood of Oku-Matsushima. Miyatojima offers a memorable opportunity to experience the landscape and culture of Miyagi beyond the best-known sights of central Matsushima.
