Momen Kaido Exchange Center

Gateway to Historic Hirata

Momen Kaido Exchange Center is a cultural and historical facility in Hirata-cho, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Located at the heart of the historic Momen Kaido district, the center is an important starting point for exploring a town that flourished as a major cotton trading center from the Edo period through the Meiji period.

With its well-preserved historic streetscape, Momen Kaido offers visitors a glimpse of traditional Japan. The exchange center serves as a place where travelers can learn about the area’s history and culture before setting out to explore its old merchant houses, waterways, traditional shops, and other attractions.

The facility includes a tourist information center, exhibition areas, hands-on activities, and a restaurant, making it a convenient base for discovering the historic district.

A Historic Building with Roots in the Edo Period

The Former Nagasaki Medical Residence

The present-day exchange center was created by renovating the former residence of the Nagasaki family, a medical family whose home was known during the Edo period as a “Geka Gomen Yashiki”, a residence associated with an officially recognized surgical practice.

The Nagasaki family began practicing medicine as surgeons in 1738. In 1742, the family established its residence here after receiving special recognition as a medical household. The family continued practicing medicine for generations until the early Showa period, playing an important role in supporting healthcare in the local community.

During the Edo period, landowners generally paid a local land tax known as jisen. However, doctors were considered essential to the community, and local systems supported the permanent residence of medical families. This background contributed to the special status associated with the Nagasaki residence.

Reborn as a Cultural Exchange Facility

The historic building had gradually deteriorated over the years, but it was renovated in 2005 and reopened as the Izumo City Momen Kaido Exchange Center.

Today, it serves as a center for local revitalization, providing tourist information while introducing visitors to the history, culture, and traditional activities of Momen Kaido.

Hands-On Cultural Experiences

The center offers opportunities to experience aspects of the area’s traditional cotton culture, including weaving activities.

These hands-on experiences provide a more personal understanding of the skills and industries that once supported Hirata’s prosperity. Rather than simply looking at historic buildings, visitors can connect with the area’s heritage through traditional crafts and activities.

Motoishibashi Residence – A Registered Tangible Cultural Property

A Wealthy Farmer’s Historic Residence

Next to the exchange center stands Motoishibashi Residence, a historic property built around 1750. It was the residence of one of the area’s major landowning families and is regarded as one of the most important historic buildings along Momen Kaido.

The house features the traditional kirizuma-tsuma-iri gabled townhouse style, together with distinctive regional architectural details such as namako-kabe walls and Izumo-style latticework.

A Refined Interior and Japanese Garden

Inside the residence are elegant rooms that were used as reception rooms when the feudal lord visited, as well as a rare tea room designed for sencha-style tea.

The property also has an Izumo-style garden combining elements of a dry landscape garden with a roji tea garden. Its appearance changes with the seasons, offering visitors a peaceful example of traditional Japanese garden design.

The Ishibashi Family and Local Culture

The Ishibashi family contributed significantly to the development of the local community and supported education and industry.

In particular, Ishibashi Magohachi devoted himself to promoting education and opened his residence to teach local children. His efforts helped contribute to the development of learning and culture in the area.

Gohan-ya Watanohana – Dining at the Exchange Center

A Relaxing Japanese-Style Dining Space

The exchange center is home to Gohan-ya Watanohana, a restaurant specializing in Japanese cuisine. Guests can enjoy a meal in a calm traditional setting while looking out over the garden.

The restaurant is popular not only with visitors but also with local residents, making it a pleasant place to experience the area’s everyday food culture.

Local Dishes and Sweets

The menu includes dishes such as the Watanohana Set Meal, soba set meals, and Izumo Soba, prepared using local ingredients. The food has a simple, comforting character that reflects the region’s traditional cuisine.

For a lighter break during a walk, visitors can also enjoy traditional sweets and drinks such as zenzai and matcha tea.

The Charm of Momen Kaido

A Historic Merchant Townscape

Momen Kaido preserves the atmosphere of a merchant town that prospered through the cotton trade during the Edo period.

White-plastered storehouses and traditional townhouses with lattice windows line the streets, creating a quiet and nostalgic atmosphere. Walking through the district gives visitors the feeling of stepping into a different era of Japanese history.

A Town Shaped by Water Transportation

Located between Lake Shinji and the Sea of Japan, Hirata developed a sophisticated system of water transportation. Boats carried goods through waterways, helping the town grow into an important commercial and market center.

Traces of this history remain today, including former boat landing areas known as kakedashi and narrow lanes leading through the historic neighborhood.

Traditional Streets with a Modern Touch

Community-led revitalization efforts have brought new life to Momen Kaido. Historic houses have been renovated into cafés, shops, and other businesses, creating a pleasant combination of traditional architecture and contemporary culture.

This balance between preservation and innovation allows Momen Kaido to remain a living neighborhood rather than simply an open-air museum.
