Okuizumo Orochi Loop

A Sky-High Mountain Road Inspired by the Legendary Yamata-no-Orochi

The Okuizumo Orochi Loop is one of Japan’s largest double-loop roads, built along National Route 314 in Okuizumo Town, Shimane Prefecture. It is an important transportation route connecting Shimane and Hiroshima, but its remarkable engineering and spectacular mountain scenery have also made it a popular sightseeing destination.

The name Orochi Loop comes from Yamata-no-Orochi, the legendary eight-headed serpent from Japanese mythology. The road’s distinctive double-coiled shape resembles a giant serpent winding through the mountains, making it a particularly fitting landmark for Okuizumo, a region deeply connected with Japanese mythology.

One of Japan’s Largest Double-Loop Roads

The Orochi Loop opened in 1992 and was constructed to overcome an elevation difference of approximately 167 meters. The entire route is about 2,360 meters long and consists of 11 bridges and three tunnels, forming two large loops across the steep mountain terrain.

The road was developed to provide a safer and more comfortable route through the rugged landscape between Sakane and Miinohara. Its enormous scale and dramatic curves demonstrate the remarkable engineering required to build transportation infrastructure in this mountainous region.

A Scenic Drive Through Okuizumo

Beautiful Landscapes in Every Season

The attraction of the Orochi Loop goes far beyond its impressive road design. Because it winds through a high-elevation mountain environment, travelers can enjoy Okuizumo’s rich natural scenery while driving.

Spring brings fresh green leaves, while summer covers the mountains in deep green. In autumn, the surrounding mountains are transformed by brilliant foliage, and winter creates a mysterious landscape covered in snow.

The autumn foliage season is particularly popular, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy the scenery and take photographs of the winding road and surrounding mountains.

The Spectacular Miino-Ohashi Bridge

One of the most recognizable features of the Orochi Loop is Miino-Ohashi Bridge, which spans a valley along the route. Its striking red arch stands out beautifully against the surrounding mountains, making it a favorite photography location.

The bridge and the overall structure of the Orochi Loop can be viewed from nearby observation areas and from the roadside station. The combination of the red bridge, winding road, and natural landscape creates an especially impressive scene.

A Sightseeing Base Centered Around the Roadside Station

Okuizumo Orochi Loop Roadside Station

Near the top of the loop, at an elevation of approximately 700 meters, stands the Okuizumo Orochi Loop Roadside Station. The facility serves as a convenient base where travelers can take a break, enjoy local food, purchase souvenirs, and gather information about the surrounding area.

The shop offers a selection of Okuizumo specialties, including traditional Japanese iron knives, locally produced seasonings, sweets, and other souvenirs from Shimane Prefecture.

Local Food and a Place to Rest

The restaurant serves regional dishes such as nodoguro ramen and meat soba. Visitors can also enjoy dishes featuring Okuizumo Wagyu beef and maitake mushrooms, as well as tantanmen made with egoma, a traditional Japanese seed used in regional cuisine.

A rest area and information corner are also available for travelers, with the rest area accessible 24 hours a day. The roadside station is therefore a convenient place to stop during a mountain drive.

Nearby Attractions

Okuizumo Iron Sculpture Museum

Located across from the roadside station, the Okuizumo Iron Sculpture Museum offers a unique encounter between art and nature. The museum displays works by internationally recognized sculptor Osamu Shimoda, with the surrounding seasonal landscape providing a constantly changing backdrop.

The peaceful setting allows visitors to appreciate the sculptures while also experiencing the beauty and tranquility of the Okuizumo highlands.

Hoshifuru Mikuni Lodge

A lodge facility is also located nearby, offering travelers the opportunity to stay overnight surrounded by nature. Each lodge can accommodate up to seven people, making it suitable for families and groups.

The high elevation and clear mountain air create excellent conditions for enjoying the night sky. On clear evenings, countless stars appear overhead, giving the accommodation its evocative image as a place where the stars seem to fall from the sky.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

The area around the Orochi Loop features walking paths, ski facilities, and Miinohara Station, providing a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year.

Enmeisui Spring, known for its clear natural water, is also located nearby. These attractions make the Orochi Loop area a convenient base for exploring the mountains and natural scenery of Okuizumo.

A Road Recognized for Its Design

An Award-Winning Approach to Mountain Road Construction

The Orochi Loop was designed around the concept of creating roads where people and vehicles exist in harmony. Its combination of functionality, safety, and scenic design was highly recognized, and the project received the Grand Prize at the 5th Human Road Conference Awards.

The Orochi Loop is therefore more than transportation infrastructure. It demonstrates how engineering can become part of the landscape and create a destination that visitors come to appreciate in its own right.

Access

By Car

The Orochi Loop can be reached by car in approximately 45 to 50 minutes from either the Tojo Interchange or Shobara Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway.

Because the route passes through mountainous terrain, the drive itself is part of the experience. Travelers can enjoy changing scenery as they climb through the mountains toward Miinohara.

By Public Transportation

From Miinohara Station on the JR Kisuki Line, the area is approximately a 15-minute walk away. From Izumo-Sakane Station, it takes approximately 30 minutes on foot.

Visitors traveling by bus can get off at the Michi-no-Eki stop, which is located just a short distance from the roadside station and the Orochi Loop sightseeing area.

Experience the Scale and Beauty of the Orochi Loop

The Okuizumo Orochi Loop is a remarkable destination where advanced engineering, Japanese mythology, and the natural beauty of the mountains come together.

It offers much more than a scenic driving route. Visitors can admire the dramatic landscape, photograph Miino-Ohashi Bridge, enjoy local cuisine, stay beneath a star-filled sky, and explore the region’s art and culture.

The Orochi Loop offers both the excitement of driving through a spectacular mountain road and the pleasure of stopping to admire the scenery. For travelers exploring Okuizumo, it is an ideal place to experience the region’s distinctive combination of mythology, nature, and human ingenuity.
