Okuizumo Orochi Loop Roadside Station

A Spectacular Mountain Road in the Sky

Okuizumo Orochi Loop Roadside Station is a roadside station located along National Route 314 in Okuizumo Town, Shimane Prefecture. It stands at an elevation of approximately 700 meters near the summit of the Orochi Loop, one of Japan’s largest double-loop roads. Located close to the border with Hiroshima Prefecture, it serves as one of the southern gateways to Shimane.

Thanks to its highland location, visitors can enjoy magnificent mountain scenery, clear mountain air, and the changing beauty of nature throughout the year. The station is more than just a convenient stop on a road trip; its spectacular surroundings make it a destination worth visiting in its own right.

The Orochi Loop: One of Japan’s Largest Double-Loop Roads

The most distinctive feature of the area is the Orochi Loop, which winds dramatically through the mountains around the roadside station. The road was constructed to overcome the steep slopes that once made this section of National Route 314 between Shimane and Hiroshima particularly difficult to travel.

The loop stretches approximately 2,360 meters and connects an elevation difference of about 167 meters with 11 bridges and three tunnels. Its distinctive double-coiled shape was inspired by Yamata-no-Orochi, the eight-headed serpent from Japanese mythology.

One of the most striking landmarks is the red arch of Miino-Ohashi Bridge, which spans the center of the loop. Its dramatic structure against the surrounding mountains makes it a popular photography spot.

Panoramic Views from the Observation Deck

An observation deck at the roadside station offers a sweeping view of the entire Orochi Loop. From here, visitors can appreciate the impressive scale of the road as it winds through the mountainous landscape.

The observation area also provides views of the JR Kisuki Line and Miino-Ohashi Bridge, making it an appealing spot for railway enthusiasts as well as travelers interested in scenic photography.

The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Fresh green foliage appears in spring, deep greenery covers the mountains in summer, colorful autumn leaves transform the landscape in fall, and snow creates a beautiful winter scene. Each visit can therefore reveal a different side of Okuizumo.

Facilities and Things to Enjoy

Local Specialties and Souvenirs

The station’s shop offers a wide selection of local products from Okuizumo, including traditional Japanese iron knives, soy sauce, miso, and locally made sweets. Souvenirs from other parts of Shimane Prefecture are also available, making the station a convenient place to shop during your journey.

Among the more distinctive products are Orochi-zuke, a local preserved food, and Tamahagane Chocolate, a unique souvenir inspired by Okuizumo’s traditional ironmaking culture. These unusual local products make memorable gifts for travelers.

Enjoying Okuizumo Cuisine

The restaurant at the roadside station serves dishes featuring ingredients associated with Okuizumo. Popular choices include nodoguro ramen, made with the flavorful Japanese blackthroat seaperch, and meat soba, offering a satisfying taste of the local food culture.

Other regional dishes feature Okuizumo Wagyu beef and Okuizumo maitake mushrooms, while sesame seed and other locally associated ingredients are used in dishes such as tantanmen. The variety of local flavors makes the station a convenient place to enjoy a meal while exploring the region.
