Ukimido Pavilion stands gracefully over Sagiike Pond in Nara Park, offering one of the area’s most picturesque waterside views. The hexagonal pavilion features a traditional cypress-bark roof, and its elegant reflection on the pond creates a peaceful scene that attracts visitors throughout the year. It is also a popular place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Nara.
Ukimido Pavilion was originally built in 1916 and reconstructed in 1994. After sunset, it is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere as the pavilion and its reflection emerge against the evening sky.
The surrounding scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. Cherry blossoms and crape myrtles add color to the waterside in warmer months, while autumn brings vivid foliage that contrasts with the pavilion’s traditional architecture.
The pavilion is situated within Asajigahara Garden, a scenic area of Nara Park. The park is home to numerous nationally designated cultural properties and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Todai-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
Asajigahara Garden is also known for Kataoka Plum Grove, a traditional plum-blossom viewing spot. Approximately 250 plum trees bloom here from late February to mid-March, bringing delicate colors and fragrance to the landscape.
With its tranquil pond, traditional architecture, and seasonal scenery, Sagiike Pond and Ukimido Pavilion offer a relaxing place to experience a quieter side of historic Nara.
