Tonewase persimmons are an early-ripening variety of astringent persimmon grown in Nara Prefecture, one of Japan’s leading persimmon-producing regions. Greenhouse cultivation is particularly well established in the prefecture, allowing these sweet, richly flavored fruits to reach the market as early as summer.
Tonewase originated as a natural branch mutation of Hiratanenashi, an astringent persimmon variety associated with Tenri City in Nara Prefecture. It was officially registered in 1980 (Showa 55 in the Japanese calendar).
In appearance, Tonewase closely resembles Hiratanenashi. Its characteristic astringency is removed before sale, revealing a mellow, rich sweetness and a smooth, satisfying flavor. This excellent taste has made it a popular choice among early-season persimmons.
One of Tonewase’s main attractions is its early harvest. Persimmons grown in greenhouses begin shipping as early as July, while the main market season extends from early July to mid-September. Open-field fruit generally appears in shops from around late September, giving consumers access to fresh persimmons earlier than many other varieties.
Thanks to greenhouse cultivation and its naturally early ripening, Tonewase offers a chance to enjoy Japan’s beloved autumn fruit during the summer months. Its soft, rich sweetness makes it a delicious seasonal treat.
