Sukawa-shuku Museum is a historical museum in Sukawa, Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture. It introduces the history of Sukawa-shuku, a former post town that flourished along the old Mikuni Kaidō highway.
The museum stands on the former site of a waki-honjin, a secondary inn that provided accommodation for feudal lords and other high-ranking travelers when the main honjin was unavailable or insufficient. The gate at the entrance is a reconstruction of the gate that once belonged to the area’s honjin, helping visitors imagine the atmosphere of the historic post town.
The museum displays approximately 1,000 historical items related to the period when Sukawa-shuku prospered as a post town. The collection includes old documents, paintings and calligraphy, weapons, and household furnishings.
Among the exhibits are historical documents concerning feudal lords who passed through Sukawa-shuku as part of the sankin-kōtai system, as well as everyday objects used by local people. Together, these materials provide an insight into life and travel in the post-town era.
At the rear of the museum is a reconstruction of the jōdan-no-ma, a formal raised-floor room that once existed in the former honjin residence.
The jōdan-no-ma was a prestigious room reserved for feudal lords and other high-ranking guests. It offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the customs, social hierarchy, and hospitality culture of Japan’s historic post towns.
The museum is housed in a traditional single-story wooden building with a single exhibition floor. Its calm atmosphere makes it possible to explore the exhibits at a leisurely pace.
Sukawa-shuku Museum is located along the sightseeing route through Takumi no Sato, near the center of a streetscape that still preserves the character of the former post town on the Mikuni Kaidō.
Traditional houses line the surrounding streets, while nearby Takumi no Ie workshops offer hands-on experiences in traditional crafts such as woodworking, washi papermaking, and bamboo crafts. Local restaurants and cafés can also be found throughout the area.
Surrounded by peaceful countryside, Takumi no Sato offers a variety of experiences, including the Nōbotoke Meguri stone-statue walking route, traditional craft workshops, and local specialty shopping.
Among these attractions, Sukawa-shuku Museum provides a particularly valuable opportunity to learn more deeply about the area’s history and culture.
By combining a visit to the museum with a stroll through the historic streets of Sukawa-shuku, travelers can experience the atmosphere of an old Japanese post town while discovering the history and cultural heritage of Minakami.
