Takaragawa Onsen Takaragawa Sanso

An Exceptional Hot Spring Experience Surrounded by Nature

Takaragawa Onsen Takaragawa Sanso is a day-use hot spring facility located deep in the mountains of Minakami, Gunma Prefecture. Takaragawa Onsen is renowned for its beautiful natural surroundings and long history, and Sanso provides an easy way to experience its famous hot springs without staying overnight.

Along with the historic Osenkaku inn, founded in 1923, Takaragawa Sanso has welcomed visitors seeking relaxation in the mountains. Its vast open-air baths, clear mountain stream, and peaceful valley scenery create an extraordinary bathing experience surrounded by nature.

Magnificent Open-Air Baths on an Extraordinary Scale

The greatest attraction of Takaragawa Onsen is its spectacular collection of open-air baths, with a combined area of approximately 470 tatami mats.

Four large baths are situated along the valley of the Takaragawa River, a tributary of the Tone River. Each bath has its own character, while enormous natural rocks and the surrounding forest create a dramatic landscape.

The baths consist of the mixed-gender Maka-no-Yu, Hannya-no-Yu, and Kodakara-no-Yu, as well as the women-only Maya-no-Yu. Maka-no-Yu and Kodakara-no-Yu are particularly spacious, with enough room for more than 100 bathers at a time, giving visitors a sense of scale rarely found at Japanese hot springs.

Enjoy the Hot Springs with the Changing Seasons

One of the defining features of Takaragawa Onsen is its harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. In spring, mountain cherry blossoms add color to the valley. Summer brings lush green foliage, while autumn transforms the mountainsides with brilliant autumn leaves.

In winter, the landscape becomes a vast white wonderland. Soaking in a warm outdoor bath while surrounded by snow is an especially memorable experience.

The combination of falling snow, rising steam, and the quiet mountain valley creates an atmosphere far removed from everyday life. It is an ideal place to relax while enjoying the changing beauty of Japan’s seasons.

Abundant Natural Hot Spring Water

Takaragawa Onsen is supplied by four natural hot spring sources, producing approximately 1,800 liters of water per minute.

The water is a weakly alkaline simple hot spring. Clear and gentle, it has traditionally been enjoyed for its soothing qualities, including relaxation from muscle discomfort, sensitivity to cold, and everyday fatigue.

The baths are essentially supplied directly from the natural sources, without adding water, artificial heating, or recirculation. This allows visitors to experience the hot spring water in a particularly natural form.

Four Distinctive Open-Air Baths

Maka-no-Yu — Mixed-Gender Bath

Maka-no-Yu is one of the symbols of Takaragawa Onsen and covers approximately 120 tatami mats. Built in 1940, this historic open-air bath has appeared in numerous films, television programs, and magazines.

Its location directly beside the river creates an exceptional sense of openness. Guests can soak in the warm water while listening to the sound of the flowing stream and enjoying the surrounding mountains.

Kodakara-no-Yu — Mixed-Gender Bath

Kodakara-no-Yu is the largest of the four baths, covering approximately 200 tatami mats. Its enormous size provides an extraordinary sense of freedom and space.

A small shrine is enshrined above the bath, adding a distinctive and mystical atmosphere. The bath is also associated with a traditional belief that it brings blessings for having children, and it has long been cherished by visitors.

Hannya-no-Yu — Mixed-Gender Bath

Hannya-no-Yu is a relatively compact open-air bath of approximately 50 tatami mats. Its smaller scale gives it a more peaceful and intimate atmosphere.

The lighting is kept relatively subdued at night, creating a calm environment for those who may feel hesitant about mixed-gender bathing.

Maya-no-Yu — Women-Only Bath

Maya-no-Yu is an open-air bath exclusively for women, covering approximately 100 tatami mats.

Its spacious design allows bathers to enjoy an unobstructed connection with the surrounding natural environment. The changing room is constructed entirely from hinoki cypress, adding to the traditional and comfortable atmosphere.

A Comfortable Mixed-Gender Bathing Style

Guests using the mixed-gender open-air baths wear specially provided bathing garments. This makes the experience more comfortable for first-time visitors and international travelers who may be unfamiliar with mixed-gender bathing in Japan.

Visitors are required to use the bathing garments provided by the facility; privately brought bathing garments cannot be used.

International Recognition and Global Attention

Takaragawa Onsen has received considerable attention from international travel guides and media. Lonely Planet, one of the world’s leading travel guide publishers, selected Takaragawa Onsen as No. 1 among its top 10 hot springs in Japan and introduced it as a Best Riverside Onsen.

It has also been ranked among the world’s notable hot springs in coverage distributed by international news agency Reuters, helping establish Takaragawa as a destination known to hot spring enthusiasts around the globe.

Famous as a Film Location

Takaragawa Onsen is also known as a filming location for the 2014 Japanese movie Thermae Romae II.

The enormous Kodakara-no-Yu was used for a memorable bathing scene. The dramatic combination of the open-air bath, flowing river, and huge natural rocks showcased the spectacular scenery of Takaragawa Onsen to audiences in Japan and overseas.

The atmosphere can be particularly enchanting in the early morning, when mist may rise from the river, or around sunset, when soft light falls across the valley. During winter, the snow-covered scenery can create an almost painting-like landscape.

The location has become increasingly popular with international travelers, with individual visitors reportedly arriving from approximately 150 countries.

Facilities and Local Mountain Cuisine

Takaragawa Sanso offers spacious areas where visitors can rest, as well as a shop and dining area serving local specialties.

The menu makes use of ingredients associated with the surrounding mountain villages, including wild mountain vegetables and iwana char. One popular dish is kamameshi, a traditional rice dish cooked to order in an individual pot.

Visitors can also try dam curry, a specialty associated with the Minakami area and inspired by the shape and appearance of a dam. Enjoying a local meal alongside a hot spring visit makes for a memorable day in the mountains.

A Historic Hot Spring with an Ancient Legend

Takaragawa Onsen is associated with a legend that says Prince Yamato Takeru discovered the hot spring after being guided there by a white hawk.

For this reason, the spring was once known as “Hakutaka-no-Yu,” or “White Hawk Hot Spring.” The story adds a sense of history and romance to the natural beauty of the area.

The hot spring has been enjoyed by visitors for generations, combining the healing tradition of Japanese hot springs with the abundant gifts of the surrounding mountains.

Access and Day-Use Tips

From JR Minakami Station, the journey to Takaragawa Onsen takes approximately 30 minutes by bus. Get off at Takaragawa Iriguchi, followed by a transfer to a shuttle vehicle for approximately five minutes.

By car, the onsen is approximately 30 minutes from the Minakami Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway.

Please note that shuttle service is not available for day-use visitors. If you are planning a day trip, it is recommended that you check your transportation arrangements in advance.
