Located in Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture, the Tanigawadake Information Center is a facility where visitors can learn about the spectacular natural environment of Mount Tanigawa, its history, and the relationship between the mountain and the people who have explored and protected it. Opened in 2021, the center promotes the importance of enjoying the area’s natural environment in a way that is both fun and safe while helping to preserve it for the future.

Inside the center, exhibition panels introduce the plants and animals, geological features, and climate of the Mount Tanigawa area. The exhibits are designed to be accessible to everyone from first-time visitors to experienced hikers.

Visitors can also enjoy immersive experiences using a dome-shaped screen and virtual reality (VR). These experiences provide a vivid introduction to the mountain environment and allow visitors to imagine what it is like to explore the area before heading outdoors.

Discovering the Nature and History of Mount Tanigawa

Mount Tanigawa stands on the border between Gunma and Niigata prefectures and reaches an elevation of around 2,000 meters. It is known as a distinctive double-peaked mountain, with two main summits called Toma-no-Mimi and Oki-no-Mimi.

The mountain’s steep terrain and rapidly changing weather have helped preserve a rich natural environment where numerous plants and animals, including rare species, can be found.

The area forms part of Joshin’etsukogen National Park and was also designated as a Minakami UNESCO Eco Park in 2017. Vast forests and clear mountain streams extend across the region, making it a popular destination for hiking, mountaineering, camping, and other outdoor activities.

The Tanigawa Mountain Range: A Paradise for Hikers and Climbers

The Tanigawa Mountain Range extends from Mount Tanigawa toward the mountain border with Niigata Prefecture. Peaks including Mount Shigekura, Mount Kasagatake, and Mount Asahidake form part of this impressive alpine landscape.

The region offers a wide variety of climbing and hiking experiences, from day hikes and long-distance traverses to rock climbing and canyoning. This diversity attracts outdoor enthusiasts with different levels of experience and interests.

At the same time, the rugged terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions mean that careful preparation is essential. The Tanigawadake Information Center provides the latest information on weather and trail conditions, making it a useful place to stop before beginning a mountain adventure.

Tanigawadake Mountain Museum and Nearby Facilities

Near Doai Station of the Tanigawadake Ropeway, visitors can also find the Tanigawadake Mountain Museum. The museum introduces the history of mountaineering through exhibits featuring historic climbing equipment, valuable photographs, and displays related to expeditions to the Himalayas.

The museum is generally open from around late April through November, corresponding with the main mountaineering season. It offers an opportunity to learn more about the culture and history of climbing in the Tanigawa region.

Electric Buses and the Spectacular Scenery of Ichinokurasawa

Private vehicles are not permitted to enter Ichinokurasawa, one of the most spectacular areas around Mount Tanigawa. Environmentally friendly electric buses provide access instead.

The buses operate with limited capacity, and guides provide explanations about the area’s natural environment and history during the journey.

A Variety of Hiking Routes

The area around Mount Tanigawa offers hiking routes for a wide range of abilities, from relatively easy walks to challenging mountain climbs.

For Experienced Hikers: Nishiguro Ridge Route

The Nishiguro Ridge Route is a demanding mountain trail that takes approximately seven hours round trip. It is regarded as a route for experienced hikers and requires suitable equipment, preparation, and knowledge of mountain conditions.

A More Accessible Route via Tenjindaira

For visitors looking for a less demanding approach, the Tanigawadake Ropeway provides access to Tenjindaira, from where hikers can follow the Tenjin Ridge route toward the summit.

The climb to the summit takes approximately three hours, allowing hikers to enjoy impressive mountain scenery along the way. The route provides a convenient way to experience the spectacular landscape of Mount Tanigawa without starting from the valley floor.

Several shorter walking trails are also available around Tenjindaira. These are suitable for visitors who simply want to enjoy the seasonal scenery at a relaxed pace. A restaurant in the area also provides a convenient place to rest while taking in the surrounding mountain views.

Original Souvenirs and Online Shopping

The Tanigawadake Information Center also sells original mountain-themed goods. These items are popular as souvenirs and as mementos of a visit to Mount Tanigawa.

Some products are also available through an online shop, including items that are offered exclusively online. This allows visitors to continue enjoying the experience even after returning home.
