Taineiji Temple (Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture)

A Historic Mountain Temple Where History and Culture Live On

Taineiji Temple is a historic Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Sugawa, Minakami, Gunma Prefecture. Founded during the Kamakura period, the temple has a long history and stands quietly among the mountains in the Takumi-no-Sato area, one of Minakami’s popular tourist destinations.

Surrounded by peaceful natural scenery, Taineiji offers visitors an opportunity to experience both Japanese history and the beauty of the countryside. The temple grounds include a temple gate, main hall, bell tower, and priests’ quarters, as well as numerous cultural treasures that preserve the history and traditions of the local community.

A Temple Founded in the Kamakura Period

Taineiji is believed to have been founded in 1309, during the Kamakura period. According to tradition, it was established by a person named Shinkai, who had traveled from western Japan. The temple was originally associated with the Tendai school of Buddhism.

After a period of decline, the temple was restored in 1537 by Dōan Bunso, the eighth head priest of Gyokusenji Temple in Shimomaki, Tsukiyono. It subsequently developed as a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, which it remains today.

The temple is also said to have been developed with the support of Hosokawa Iyo-no-kami Minamoto Tsunetoshi, the local lord of Sugawa. Through its close connection with the faith and daily life of the community, Taineiji has been carefully preserved for generations.

The temple grounds also enshrine Akiba Sanjakubō Daigongen, a deity traditionally associated with protection against fire. For this reason, Taineiji has long been known locally as a temple offering protection from fire.

Historic Architecture Designated as Important Cultural Property

Taineiji preserves a number of historically and artistically significant buildings and sculptures. Among them, the temple gate and the transoms and Buddhist altar in the main hall have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Gunma Prefecture.

The Historic Temple Gate

The temple gate is believed to date from the Edo period and creates an impressive entrance to the temple grounds. Inside are statues of the Shaka Triad, the two principal disciples Kāśyapa and Ānanda, and the Sixteen Arhats.

The solemn sculptures convey the spiritual atmosphere of the temple, while the coffered ceiling is decorated with beautiful paintings of flowers and birds, adding an artistic touch to the historic structure.

Intricate Carvings in the Main Hall

The transoms in the main hall feature delicate openwork carvings of exceptional artistic quality. On the right side are carvings of paulownia trees and phoenixes, while the left side depicts pine trees and peacocks.

These elaborate works provide a glimpse into the sophisticated carving techniques of the period. At the center of the main hall, the shumidan Buddhist altar is richly decorated with carvings of peonies and guardian lions, displaying an ornate style reminiscent of the Momoyama period.

A Temple That Supported Local Education and Culture

Taineiji served not only as a religious institution but also as an important center of education and culture for the local community. During the Edo period, a terakoya temple school operated here, providing local children with instruction in reading and writing.

In 1873, shortly after the beginning of the Meiji period, Sugawa Elementary School was established within the temple grounds. This history reflects the important role Taineiji played in the development of the local community.

Hydrangeas and Mountain Wildflowers

Thanks to its mountain setting, Taineiji offers beautiful seasonal scenery throughout the year. In early summer, the temple grounds are especially attractive when hydrangeas bloom along the approach to the temple gate and main hall.

Many of the flowers are traditional varieties such as Hortensia macrophylla and lacecap hydrangeas. From late June to early August, the colorful flowers create a picturesque atmosphere characteristic of a quiet mountain temple.

Wildflowers such as mountain lilies and Veronicastrum can also be found in the temple grounds and surrounding woodland. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk while taking in the natural beauty of the area.

The Final Stop on the Takumi-no-Sato “Stone Buddha Tour”

Taineiji is also known as the final destination of the “Nobutsu Meguri”, a walking route through the Takumi-no-Sato area that introduces visitors to historic roadside Buddhist statues and stone figures.

After walking through the historic streets of Sugawa-juku and enjoying the surrounding rural landscape, visitors arrive at the peaceful mountain temple. Its quiet setting makes it a particularly relaxing way to conclude a walk through Takumi-no-Sato.

Visitors can also take part in a shakyo experience, the traditional practice of hand-copying Buddhist sutras. In the tranquil surroundings of the temple, this offers a peaceful opportunity to slow down and experience an aspect of Japanese Buddhist culture.

Access

Taineiji Temple is approximately 17 minutes by car from the Tsukiyono Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway. From Jōmō-Kōgen Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, the temple is approximately 20 minutes by taxi.

The temple grounds are open for visitors to worship freely, making Taineiji an inviting destination for those who wish to experience the area’s history, culture, and natural surroundings at a relaxed pace.
