Sumiyoshi Festival

A Traditional Grand Festival that Brings Summer to Life in Osaka

The Sumiyoshi Festival is an annual religious festival centered on the grand annual festival held at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, with its main ceremonies taking place around July 31. With traditions dating back to the Nara period, it is one of Osaka’s major summer events and is counted among the Three Great Summer Festivals of Osaka, together with the Aizen Festival and Tenjin Festival.

The origins of Sumiyoshi Taisha’s summer festival can be traced back to the Nara-period ritual known as the “June Miharae,” a ceremony performed to purify people and drive away misfortune. It has also traditionally been known simply as “Oharai,” or purification.

Today, the Sumiyoshi Festival takes place over a period extending from Marine Day in July through August 1. A series of important Shinto ceremonies are held during this period, including the Nagoshi Harae Purification Ceremony and the Mikoshi Procession Festival.

Festival Schedule and Ceremonies

Marine Day in July: Mikoshi Washing Ceremony

The festival begins with the Mikoshi Washing Ceremony, during which the mikoshi, or portable shrine, is purified with seawater.

Held at Sumiyoshi Park, this ceremony is an important event marking the beginning of the festival. The ritual reflects Sumiyoshi Taisha’s long connection with the sea.

July 30: Festival Eve

The Yoimiya Festival is held as the eve of the Sumiyoshi Festival. Lanterns are lit throughout the shrine grounds, creating a beautiful and atmospheric setting for prayers.

Many worshippers gather at the shrine, and the excitement surrounding the main festival begins to build.

July 31: Grand Annual Festival and Nagoshi Harae

During the Grand Annual Festival, ceremonies are held at the First Main Sanctuary. Traditional dances associated with Sumiyoshi Taisha, including Kumano Mai and Sumiyoshi Odori, are performed as offerings.

The Nagoshi Harae Purification Ceremony is also held on the same day. This traditional ritual is intended to purify people by removing spiritual impurities and is designated as an Intangible Cultural Property.

August 1: Mikoshi Procession and Togu Festival

On August 1, the Mikoshi Procession Festival takes place. The traditional procession on foot was revived in 2005, and the solemn procession makes its way through the local area as residents watch from along the route.

The Togu Festival and Arakawa Grand Purification Ceremony are also held on the same day and attract many worshippers.

During the Mikoshi Procession Festival on August 1, the mikoshi is carried through the local community accompanied by a large procession.

The grand route extends from Sumiyoshi Taisha to Shukuin Togu in Sakai City. Large crowds gather along the streets to watch the solemn procession as it makes its way through the area.
