Asahi Onsen (Hamada City)

A Peaceful Hot Spring Retreat Surrounded by the Mountains

Asahi Onsen is a tranquil hot spring resort in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes of the Chugoku Mountains. Known for its exceptionally soft water and gentle warmth, the spring is sometimes described as feeling as gentle on the skin as facial lotion.

Far from the noise and bustle of large cities, Asahi Onsen offers a peaceful setting where visitors can slow down, relax, and enjoy the natural beauty of rural Shimane.

A Gentle Spring Known as a “Beauty Hot Spring”

Asahi Onsen is a simple alkaline hot spring with a relatively high pH of 8.8. The water feels remarkably smooth against the skin, with a soft, slightly slippery texture. After bathing, the skin can feel pleasantly smooth and moisturized.

Because of these qualities, the spring is also known as a “beauty hot spring.” It is particularly appealing to visitors who enjoy relaxing baths in gentle mineral-rich water.

The spring temperature is approximately 34.8°C, making it relatively mild. This allows visitors to enjoy a long, leisurely soak without feeling excessive heat. The spring is traditionally associated with benefits such as relief from neuralgia, recovery from fatigue, and general health maintenance.

Enjoy the Hot Springs with the Beauty of Every Season

One of the pleasures of visiting Asahi Onsen is experiencing the changing scenery throughout the year.

In spring, cherry blossoms add soft colors to the area surrounding the hot spring resort. In summer, fireflies dance above the clear local streams, creating an enchanting nighttime scene.

Autumn brings opportunities to enjoy pear picking in the surrounding area, while winter can transform the mountain landscape into a peaceful world of snow.

Each season offers a different reason to visit, and the combination of soothing hot spring water and beautiful natural surroundings provides a deeply relaxing experience.

A Hot Spring Resort with a Modern History

The history of Asahi Onsen as a developed hot spring resort began in 1975, when drilling was used to develop its original hot spring source. At first, the spring was used mainly by local residents.

Following the opening of the Hamada Expressway, access from the Hiroshima area became easier, and the hot spring gradually attracted more visitors from outside the region.

In 2012, an additional hot spring source was developed, helping provide a more stable supply of high-quality spring water. These efforts have allowed Asahi Onsen to continue developing while retaining its peaceful mountain atmosphere.

Recognized for Its Tourism Appeal

Asahi Onsen has also received recognition through the nationwide “Onsen Election”, a tourism promotion project celebrating hot spring destinations across Japan.

It placed third in the Refreshment category in 2021 and second in 2023. In both 2024 and 2025, it was ranked first in the History and Culture category.

These recognitions reflect not only the appeal of the hot spring water but also the area’s natural environment, regional culture, and value as a tourism destination.

A Quiet Hot Spring Town with Relaxing Facilities

The hot spring area stretches around the Shirotsunokawa River, with several traditional inns and day-use bathing facilities scattered throughout the peaceful surroundings.

Unlike large-scale resort destinations, Asahi Onsen has a quiet and intimate atmosphere. It is an ideal place for travelers who want to spend time at a slower pace and experience the relaxed side of rural Japan.

The day-use hot spring facility is particularly notable for its warm wooden atmosphere. Local timber is used throughout the building, while the gentle fragrance of Japanese cypress adds to the feeling of relaxation.

Even a short visit can provide a refreshing break from a busy sightseeing itinerary.

Experience Local Culture Through Iwami Kagura

Asahi Onsen offers more than bathing. Visitors can also experience the traditional culture of the Iwami region, particularly through Iwami Kagura, a spectacular form of traditional Japanese sacred performing art.

From September through November, performances of “Night Kagura” are held every Saturday evening. The powerful dances, elaborate costumes, dramatic movements, and lively musical accompaniment offer visitors an opportunity to experience local culture at close range.

For international travelers, a Kagura performance can be a particularly memorable way to discover the traditions and stories of the Iwami region while staying in a peaceful hot spring town.

Easy Access from the Expressway

Asahi Onsen is conveniently located approximately two minutes by car from the Asahi Interchange on the Hamada Expressway.

This excellent accessibility makes the area an easy destination for a weekend getaway, a day trip, or a relaxing stop during a road trip through western Shimane.

A Peaceful Retreat for Body and Mind

Asahi Onsen combines gentle hot spring water, beautiful mountain scenery, and the traditional culture of the Iwami region.

Whether you visit in spring beneath the cherry blossoms, in summer when fireflies illuminate the streams, in autumn during the harvest season, or in winter surrounded by snow, the landscape offers a different kind of beauty with every season.

Its convenient access and tranquil atmosphere make it suitable for both day trips and overnight stays. Take time to soak in the gentle waters, enjoy the surrounding nature, and experience the traditional culture of Iwami for a relaxing escape in the mountains of Hamada.
