Hamada Children’s Museum of Art

A Creative World Where Imagination Comes to Life

Hamada Children’s Museum of Art is a unique cultural facility located on a hilltop in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. Opened in 1996, the museum was founded on the idea that encountering art from an early age helps nurture creativity and sensitivity.

With its striking white exterior and elevated location overlooking Hamada and the Sea of Japan, the museum offers an inspiring setting for visitors of all ages. Inside, a world of imagination and creative expression awaits, making it an enjoyable destination not only for children but also for adults.

A Museum Where You Can Both See and Create Art

The museum’s greatest appeal is that visitors can enjoy both “seeing” art and “creating” art. Exhibitions feature drawings, crafts, and other works created by children from around the world. Their imaginative and unrestricted forms of expression can inspire visitors to see familiar things from new perspectives.

The museum also presents special exhibitions by contemporary artists and interactive displays designed to make art accessible and enjoyable. Rather than simply looking at works behind glass, visitors are encouraged to engage with creativity in a more direct and personal way.

Although the museum is designed with children in mind, adults can also discover new ideas and enjoy a refreshing creative experience away from everyday routines.

Popular “Holiday Creative Activities”

On Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays in the afternoon, the museum offers hands-on workshops known as “Holiday Creative Activities.” Visitors can apply on the day and take part without complicated advance arrangements, making the program particularly convenient for families.

The themes of the workshops are often connected with current exhibitions, allowing participants to create their own original works inspired by what they have seen.

The dedicated studio is well equipped, and museum staff provide support so that even first-time participants can enjoy the activities with confidence. Through making art with their own hands, children can naturally develop their imagination, creativity, and ability to express themselves.

A Variety of Exhibitions and Facilities

The museum is housed in a five-story building containing a variety of spaces, including exhibition galleries, collection rooms, a multipurpose hall, a library, and creative studios.

Alongside works created by children from different countries, the museum also presents works by established artists. The exhibitions cover a broad range of artistic styles and provide opportunities for visitors to encounter art from different perspectives.

The museum shop sells art-related goods, picture books, and other items that make memorable souvenirs. The library provides a quiet place where visitors can browse books about art and spend some relaxing time.

Learning Through the “Museum School” Program

Hamada Children’s Museum of Art also places considerable emphasis on working together with local schools. One of its educational programs is the “Museum School,” in which classes visit the museum and spend a full day experiencing both art appreciation and creative activities.

The program is widely used by local elementary schools and kindergartens. For children, it provides a valuable opportunity to learn through direct experience rather than simply studying art in a classroom.

By combining the experience of looking at art with the experience of creating it themselves, children can develop a deeper understanding of artistic expression and discover the joy of communicating through their own ideas.

A Scenic Hilltop Location

The museum’s hilltop setting is another attraction. Visitors can enjoy views across Hamada City and the Sea of Japan, while the surrounding scenery creates a peaceful atmosphere even before entering the building.

The combination of art and nature gives the museum a distinctive character. A visit can become more than an indoor cultural experience, offering travelers an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the scenery as well.

Despite its name and child-focused programs, the museum is not exclusively for children. Adults can also find new inspiration and unexpected discoveries here, making it a worthwhile stop when sightseeing in Hamada.

Opening Hours and Access

The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, or the following day when Monday is a public holiday, as well as during the year-end and New Year holiday period.

By bus, the museum is conveniently located just steps from the Children’s Museum of Art-mae bus stop, served by the Iwami Kotsu Daigaku Line.

For travelers by car, the museum is approximately three minutes from the Takezako Interchange on the San’in Expressway, making it an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary around Hamada.

A Special Place to Discover the Joy of Creativity

Hamada Children’s Museum of Art is a distinctive museum where visitors can experience both the joy of looking at art and the pleasure of creating it themselves.

The uninhibited creativity of children from around the world can offer adults fresh perspectives, while hands-on activities give children the opportunity to express their own ideas in a fun and welcoming environment.

Whether you are traveling with children or simply looking for a different cultural experience, the museum offers a memorable way to enjoy art in Hamada. Take some time to explore its exhibitions, create something with your own hands, and enjoy the panoramic scenery from this hilltop museum.
