Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree (National Natural Monument)

A Remarkable 660-Year-Old Cherry Tree and National Natural Monument

The Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree stands quietly in Misumi Town, Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. Designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan in 1935, this magnificent tree is regarded as one of the region’s most remarkable ancient cherry trees.

Its estimated age is approximately 660 years. Having survived centuries of changing seasons and natural disasters, the tree continues to bloom every spring, creating an unforgettable sight for visitors.

The tree is particularly unusual because it combines characteristics of two types of cherry trees: the Edohigan cherry and the mountain cherry. It is classified as the rare Ohira cherry, scientifically known as Prunus Ohiraensis. It is sometimes described as the only tree of its kind in Japan, giving it considerable botanical and cultural significance.

The Impressive Beauty of a Giant Ancient Tree

A Spectacular Canopy in Full Bloom

The scale of the Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree is one of its most striking features. Its trunk measures more than 6 meters in circumference at chest height, while the tree stands approximately 17 meters tall.

Its branches spread approximately 24 meters from east to west and 29 meters from north to south. Around 2 meters above the ground, the trunk divides into four large main branches, creating an impressive, broadly spreading form.

When spring arrives, countless delicate white flowers cover the branches. At full bloom, the tree can appear almost like a small mountain covered in snow, creating a breathtaking landscape that attracts many visitors seeking a memorable cherry-blossom experience.

A Tree Surrounded by History and Legend

A Story Passed Down Through Generations

According to local tradition, the cherry tree was planted by an ancestor of the Ohira family, who once lived in this area. It is said to have originally been planted as a place to tie horses.

The name Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree comes from both the family name associated with the tree and the local place name, which was also called Ohira.

Over its long history, the tree has endured natural disasters including forest fires and typhoons. It is said that the tree once had 11 trunks, but only four remain today.

In 1993, professional tree care was carried out by a tree doctor, helping the ancient tree recover. It continues to produce beautiful blossoms every year, demonstrating its remarkable resilience.

A Natural Setting Beautiful in Every Season

Cherry Blossoms and Mountain Scenery

Approximately 50 mountain cherry trees have been planted around the Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree. During the spring flowering season, the surrounding landscape is transformed into a colorful cherry-blossom setting.

Walking paths and parking areas are provided, allowing visitors to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the surrounding natural environment.

Azaleas in the Following Season

After the cherry blossoms have finished blooming, the season of azaleas begins.

At nearby Misumi Park, azaleas cover the hillsides with vivid flowers, offering visitors a different seasonal landscape. The area therefore provides opportunities to enjoy beautiful scenery beyond the main cherry-blossom season.

The Ohira Cherry Blossom Festival

Traditional Culture and Local Specialties

The annual Ohira Cherry Blossom Festival is held around the peak flowering period, generally from late March to early April. The event attracts visitors who come to enjoy the ancient tree and the atmosphere of the local community.

The festival features performances of Iwami Kagura, a traditional sacred performing art from the Iwami region, along with sales of local specialties and other activities introducing the area’s culture.

A Magical Nighttime Cherry Blossom View

Illumination is also held around the festival period, allowing visitors to see the Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree after dark.

When the massive tree is illuminated against the night sky, its silhouette takes on a mysterious and almost dreamlike appearance. The nighttime view offers a completely different experience from seeing the tree in the daylight.

Access and Travel Tips

The Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree is located in a mountainous area some distance from central Hamada. Its peaceful setting is surrounded by nature and far removed from the bustle of the city.

The site is approximately 20 minutes by car from the Iwami-Misumi Interchange on the San’in Expressway.

Some sections of the approach become relatively narrow mountain roads, so drivers should proceed carefully, particularly during the busy cherry-blossom season.

The journey is well worth taking, however, as the destination offers an extraordinary landscape shaped by centuries of natural growth and human care. Visitors can leave the noise of everyday life behind and spend quiet time appreciating one of Japan’s enduring symbols of spring.

A Unique Cherry Tree That Has Witnessed Centuries of History

The Misumi Ohira Cherry Tree is much more than a beautiful place to see cherry blossoms. As a National Natural Monument, it represents an important part of the natural and cultural heritage of Hamada.

For approximately 660 years, this remarkable tree has survived changing seasons, natural disasters, and generations of local history. Its continued blooming is a reminder of the resilience of nature and the care of the people who have protected it.

When visiting Hamada in spring, take the opportunity to see this extraordinary ancient tree for yourself. Standing beneath its broad canopy and looking across the surrounding mountain landscape offers a peaceful and memorable encounter with the beauty of Japan’s traditional countryside.
