Sekisho Art Museum

A Special Place to Discover the World of Japanese Painter Shō Ishimoto

The Sekisho Museum is an art museum in Misumi, Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture, dedicated to the works of Japanese-style painter Shō Ishimoto, who was born in the area. The museum opened in 2001 and is the only museum in Japan where visitors can explore the full scope of Ishimoto’s artistic career.

A Vast Collection of Approximately 14,000 Works

The museum houses approximately 14,000 works, primarily donated by Ishimoto himself. The collection is rotated through four special exhibitions each year, allowing visitors to encounter different works each time they visit.

The Shō Ishimoto Memorial Exhibition Room introduces works from the artist’s early career through his later years. Visitors can trace the development of his artistic expression through a diverse range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, and flowers.

Contemporary Japanese Painting in the Special Exhibition Gallery

The Special Exhibition Gallery, added in 2010, features works by contemporary Japanese painters whose art Ishimoto regarded as genuine and deeply meaningful. Exhibitions also introduce artists connected with Ishimoto and creators from the Iwami region, offering an opportunity to experience the relationship between local culture and contemporary art.

A Beautiful Building Inspired by a Romanesque Church

The museum’s architecture was inspired by a church that Ishimoto encountered during a trip to Italy. Its design creates a calm and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere that complements the surrounding landscape.

At the center of the museum is a courtyard with a weeping cherry tree. Seasonal flowers bloom throughout the grounds, while wild birds also visit this peaceful natural setting.

Gardens Filled with Seasonal Beauty

The museum grounds include gardens known as Hanaseien and the Garden of Serenity. Ishimoto particularly loved peonies, which bloom beautifully alongside other seasonal flowers.

The gardens are especially attractive during the spring peony season, when visitors can enjoy the colorful flowers in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.

Step into the Artist’s Recreated Studio

In 2017, the museum completed a recreation of Ishimoto’s former studio, which was originally located at Tōji-in Temple in Kyoto. Furniture, art materials, books, and other objects that he actually used are arranged throughout the space.

Walking through the studio gives visitors the impression that the artist might return at any moment to continue working. With classical music quietly playing in the background, it is a relaxing place to reflect on his life and art.

Shō Ishimoto’s Artistic Philosophy: “Painting with the Heart”

Throughout his career, Ishimoto placed great importance on the idea of “painting with the heart.” Rather than being bound by technique or outside evaluations, he sought to paint honestly in response to the emotions and inspiration he experienced himself.

This philosophy can be felt strongly in his paintings. His portraits, particularly his depictions of women, explore beauty with sensitivity, while his paintings of flowers capture the vitality and radiance of life.

Although rooted in the tradition of Japanese-style painting, Ishimoto developed a distinctive artistic world that went beyond conventional boundaries.

A Ceiling Painting Created Together with the Local Community

One of the museum’s most impressive features is the ceiling painting in its tower. A total of 857 local residents, students, and other participants took part in creating this large-scale work.

Inspired by a wisteria trellis, the ceiling painting incorporates gold leaf, creating different impressions as the light changes throughout the day.

Ishimoto believed that painting should be an enjoyable experience and encouraged each participant to express themselves freely. The resulting artwork represents a unique collaboration between the local community and the world of art, and continues to be carefully preserved as an important part of the museum’s cultural identity.

A Museum Born from an Artist’s Love for His Hometown

The Sekisho Museum was created after Ishimoto offered to donate his works to his hometown. He envisioned a museum surrounded by nature where people could feel close to art, and its architecture and exhibition spaces were carefully designed around this wish.

Today, the museum serves as an important cultural center for the local community while providing visitors with an inviting opportunity to experience Japanese art in a peaceful environment.

A Place Where Every Visit Offers a New Discovery

The appeal of the Sekisho Museum extends beyond its impressive collection. Its architecture, gardens, recreated studio, and tranquil atmosphere all form part of the experience.

Because the exhibitions change throughout the year, each visit can offer something new. The surrounding gardens also take on different appearances with the changing seasons, creating a harmonious setting where art and nature can be enjoyed together.

Whether you have a particular interest in Japanese art or simply want to spend some quiet time away from the pace of everyday life, the Sekisho Museum offers a memorable cultural experience in Hamada. Take your time to explore the art of Shō Ishimoto while enjoying the peaceful beauty of the surrounding gardens.
