Hashi Beach

A Beautiful Beach of White Sand and Brilliant Blue Seas

Hashi Beach is a popular seaside destination within Iwami Seaside Park, which stretches across Gotsu and Hamada cities in Shimane Prefecture. Located within walking distance of Shimane Aquarium AQUAS, one of the largest aquariums in western Japan, the beach is an ideal place to combine sightseeing with time by the sea.

The beach is known for its beautiful white sand and the clear, cobalt-blue waters of the Sea of Japan. It has also been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Comfortable Swimming Beaches, a list compiled by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment.

The shoreline is relatively shallow and the waves are often gentle, making Hashi Beach especially popular with families traveling with children. During summer, visitors arrive from both inside and outside Shimane for swimming, while the beach also attracts surfers during the off-season.

A Beautiful White-Sand Beach with Shallow Waters

A Wide Sandy Shore Stretching for Approximately 700 Meters

One of Hashi Beach’s greatest attractions is its expansive sandy shoreline, which stretches for approximately 700 meters. The gently curving beach creates a wonderful sense of openness, while the unusually clear waters of the Sea of Japan extend toward the horizon.

The fine sand feels pleasantly soft beneath bare feet, making a leisurely walk along the shoreline an enjoyable experience in itself. The sea breeze and sound of the waves create a peaceful atmosphere for relaxing by the water.

On sunny days, the sea takes on a vivid cobalt-blue color, creating a striking contrast with the sky. In the evening, the setting sun over the Sea of Japan casts warm colors across the water, creating another beautiful scene.

Shallow Waters Ideal for Families

A Comfortable Setting for Children to Enjoy the Sea

Hashi Beach is known for its relatively shallow waters, with gentle depths extending some distance offshore. This makes it easier for young children to enjoy playing in the water, and the beach is particularly popular with families.

On days when the waves are calm, the shallow water is well suited to activities such as swimming and playing with inflatable rings. The wide beach also provides plenty of space for visitors to relax.

The parking area is located close to the beach, making it convenient to carry beach equipment, luggage, and other belongings. This is especially helpful for families with young children or visitors bringing outdoor gear.

Combine a Beach Visit with Shimane Aquarium AQUAS

A Popular Aquarium within Walking Distance

Just a short walk from Hashi Beach is Shimane Aquarium AQUAS, one of the largest aquariums in western Japan. The combination of a beautiful beach and a major aquarium makes this area one of the most popular leisure destinations around Gotsu City.

AQUAS features a variety of exhibits, including a huge shark aquarium, a beluga pool, a penguin facility, and pools featuring sea lions and seals.

The Famous Beluga “Magic Ring”

One of AQUAS’s best-known attractions is the “Magic Ring” performed by its beluga whales. The belugas create rings of air from their mouths, producing a fascinating sight that has delighted many visitors.

Visiting the aquarium after spending time at the beach is an excellent option for families and couples. Together, the two attractions make it possible to enjoy both the natural beauty of the Sea of Japan and an engaging indoor experience in a single trip.

Convenient Beach Facilities

Restrooms and Showers

Hashi Beach has facilities designed to make a day at the beach more comfortable. A restroom and shower building is located near the parking area, allowing visitors to rinse off after swimming.

Coin-operated showers are available for a fee and are maintained for convenient use.

Coin-operated shower fee: ¥200

Camping, setting up tents, and barbecuing are prohibited on the beach. Visitors are asked to follow the local rules in order to help protect the area’s beautiful natural environment.

Marine House

The Marine House, located next to the beach, provides shower facilities and spaces where visitors can take a break. Some of its showers use solar-heated water.

A powder room is also available, providing a convenient place for visitors to freshen up and get ready after spending time at the beach.

On the second floor, a casual café serves light meals and drinks such as shrimp pilaf, spaghetti, coffee, and cold beverages. A free rest area is also available, allowing visitors to relax while enjoying views of the sea.

Hashi Tower — A Landmark by the Beach

A Distinctive Symbol of Hashi Beach

Standing near the beach, Hashi Tower is one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks.

The tower’s design is inspired by waves breaking along the Sea of Japan and expresses a sense of affection for and fascination with the sea. The wire sections are modeled after a traditional casting net, creating an unusual structure that reflects the area’s connection with maritime culture.

The name “Hashi Tower” was chosen through a public competition. It combines the name of the area, Hashi, with the Japanese word for a bridge. Because the shape of the tower also resembles the neck of a dinosaur, the structure has acquired an affectionate local character.

The main tower stands approximately 50 meters high, while the total length, including the pedestrian crossing bridge, is approximately 220 meters. Its distinctive shape makes it easy to spot from a distance.

A Spectacular View Beyond the Sand Dune Tunnel

A Surprising Entrance to the Beach

Visitors approaching Hashi Beach pass through a sand dune tunnel measuring approximately 37 meters long.

As you emerge from the tunnel, the expansive white beach and the Sea of Japan suddenly open up before you. The dramatic change in scenery creates a strong sense of entering another world and is an especially memorable moment for first-time visitors.

The area is also a popular place to take photographs with the sea in the background. Walking toward the shoreline while feeling the sea breeze and the soft sand beneath your feet is an enjoyable experience even for those who are not planning to swim.

Iwami Seaside Park

A Large Coastal Park Stretching for 5.5 Kilometers

Hashi Beach is part of Iwami Seaside Park, a large coastal recreation area extending across Hamada and Gotsu cities.

The park has a coastline approximately 5.5 kilometers long, with beautiful scenery characterized by white sandy beaches and stands of Japanese black pine trees.

Forested areas and gently rolling hills continue along the coast, creating a rich natural environment where visitors can enjoy different landscapes throughout the year.

Walking and Nature Trails

Walking paths are provided throughout the park, allowing visitors to enjoy leisurely walks and nature exploration while looking out over the Sea of Japan.

Outdoor Recreation at Iwami Seaside Park

Ocean-View Auto Camping

Iwami Seaside Park has a full-service auto campground overlooking the Sea of Japan. Its open coastal setting makes it a popular destination for visitors who want to combine camping with ocean views.

In 1994, the site hosted the first World Auto Camping Festival in Asia, adding an interesting chapter to the park’s history as an outdoor recreation destination.

With a range of facilities, the campground can accommodate both first-time campers and experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

Cabin Village

Cabin Village provides comfortable accommodation in log-house-style buildings surrounded by trees.

The quiet natural setting is well suited to families and groups, offering an easy way to enjoy an outdoor atmosphere without giving up the comfort of a dedicated place to stay.

AQUAS Land

AQUAS Land is particularly popular with families traveling with children.

The park features a large athletic playground in the Wanpaku Area, along with equipment for younger children, inflatable trampolines, and the indoor AQUAS Kids House.

Many of these facilities can be enjoyed free of charge, giving children plenty of opportunities to run, climb, jump, and play outdoors.

Tennis Courts and Open Lawns

The park also has artificial-grass tennis courts equipped with lighting for evening play. Rental rackets are available, making it easy for visitors to enjoy a casual game.

Large grassy areas provide another place to slow down and relax. Visitors can lie on the grass and look up at the sky, enjoy a picnic with family, or simply sit and admire the view of the Sea of Japan.

Hashi Beach as a Surfing Destination

Enjoy the Dynamic Waves of the Sea of Japan

Hashi Beach is not only a summer swimming destination but also a popular surfing spot.

From autumn through winter, wave conditions can be particularly favorable, attracting surfers from Shimane and beyond. The dynamic waves of the Sea of Japan offer a very different experience from the calm summer beach.

The coastline is also quieter outside the swimming season, making the beach an appealing place for anyone who simply wants to enjoy the ocean scenery in a peaceful atmosphere.

How to Reach Hashi Beach

By Car

From Hamada-Higashi Interchange on the San’in Expressway, take National Route 9 toward Gotsu. The beach can be reached in approximately 7 minutes.

Parking is available close to the shoreline, making it convenient to transport beach equipment and other belongings.

By Train

Hashi Beach is also easily accessible by public transportation. From Hashi Station on the JR San’in Main Line, it is approximately a 5-minute walk to the beach.

Enjoy the Sea, Nature, and Family Attractions

Hashi Beach combines a beautiful white-sand shoreline with the clear blue waters of the Sea of Japan and a wide range of nearby recreational attractions.

A visit can include much more than swimming. Travelers can enjoy walking along the coast, surfing, camping, athletic playgrounds, picnics, and a visit to Shimane Aquarium AQUAS.

The combination of beach, nature, outdoor recreation, and family-friendly attractions makes Hashi Beach a versatile destination for travelers of different ages.
