Forest Park Kono-yama is a nature park located in Yamazoe Village, Yamabe District, Nara Prefecture. It forms the heart of Tsukigase Kono-yama Prefectural Natural Park and encompasses Mount Kono, which rises to 618.8 meters above sea level. With its gently rolling ridgelines and broad, graceful slopes, the mountain has long been admired as one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Yamato Highlands. The area has been developed as an outdoor recreation destination where visitors can enjoy nature, wildlife, and hands-on activities throughout the year.
One of Mount Kono’s greatest attractions is the way its scenery changes with the seasons. In spring, azaleas bloom across the summit and mountain slopes, covering the green landscape with vivid shades of pink and red. The flowers are generally at their best from mid-May to late May, drawing visitors from across Nara Prefecture and beyond. In early summer, the surrounding tea fields enter the new-tea season. Fresh green leaves stand out beautifully against the blue sky, creating a refreshing rural landscape. Autumn brings colorful foliage, with red and yellow leaves accentuating the mountain’s gentle contours. In winter, a light covering of snow can transform the area into a quiet, almost dreamlike world.
From the summit of Mount Kono, visitors can enjoy sweeping views in every direction. On clear days, the panorama includes the Nara Basin, the Iga Basin, and the surrounding mountains of the Yamato Highlands. Well-maintained walking trails make the summit accessible to a wide range of visitors, including hiking beginners and families. The mountain is an excellent place to appreciate the scale and beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Mount Kono is also known as a stargazing destination. Its convenient access and relatively low levels of artificial light make it possible to enjoy a sky filled with stars. On clear nights, visitors may be able to see the Milky Way and seasonal constellations with the naked eye. The area has also attracted attention as a place to observe a *sea of clouds* in the early morning. When weather conditions are right, clouds can gather below the mountain, creating a spectacular and atmospheric natural scene.
Mee Mee Ranch is one of the park’s most popular attractions. Approximately 60 Corriedale and Suffolk sheep live here, giving visitors the opportunity to see these friendly animals up close. The ranch offers sheep-feeding experiences and seasonal activities, including sheep-shearing demonstrations and wool-craft workshops. Around February, the ranch typically enters its lambing season, and visitors may be lucky enough to see young lambs running and playing in the fields.
Next to Mee Mee Ranch, Yōmōkan provides opportunities to explore wool processing and traditional handcrafts using wool collected from the ranch’s sheep. Visitors can learn how raw wool is transformed into useful everyday items through techniques such as knitting and weaving. The facility also serves as a place for people interested in crafts and textiles to meet, learn, and share their skills.
Located on the slopes of Mount Kono, Nabekura Gorge is a remarkable geological landscape formed by a long stretch of dark rocks of various sizes. The rocky area averages approximately 25 meters in width and extends for about 650 meters. The stones create a dramatic formation reminiscent of a river of volcanic rock. This unusual landscape is valuable from a geological and geomorphological perspective and offers visitors an opportunity to appreciate the powerful forces that shape the natural world. Illumination events are sometimes held in summer, allowing visitors to enjoy the rocks in a mysterious atmosphere quite different from their appearance during the day.
The Forest Science Museum is a popular destination for families. Its exhibits recreate aspects of the forest environment and introduce the importance of woodlands through interactive activities. Features include the Kono-yama board game and a wooden hybrid car, helping children learn about forests and the natural environment while having fun. The museum provides an engaging educational experience for young visitors.
At the woodworking center, visitors can try their hand at making things from wood and other natural materials. Activities range from simple projects suitable for summer vacation assignments to more involved do-it-yourself crafts. It is an enjoyable place to develop practical skills and discover the satisfaction of creating something by hand.
The park has several places to rest and enjoy local food. Hokkori Shokudo Eizanben serves home-style dishes prepared using ingredients from Yamazoe Village, offering visitors a taste of the region’s rural food culture. A nearby direct-sales shop sells fresh vegetables and handmade goods. Visitors can also make use of the park’s barbecue facilities, which are suitable for day trips with family and friends.
Forest Park Kono-yama hosts a variety of events throughout the year, combining outdoor activities with seasonal scenery.
Held around March and April, the lamb introduction event offers a chance to meet the young sheep at Mee Mee Ranch.
The Kono-yama Azalea Festival celebrates the mountain’s spring flowers, which typically reach their peak in mid-to-late May.
The Stargazing Gathering provides an opportunity to enjoy the night sky in the mountain’s relatively dark surroundings.
During this summer event, the unusual rocky formations of Nabekura Gorge are illuminated, creating a memorable nighttime landscape.
From Kono-guchi Interchange on the Meihan National Highway, drive approximately 3.6 km toward Mount Kono.
Take a bus bound for the Yamazoe area from JR Nara Station or Kintetsu-Nara Station and get off at the Kitano bus stop. From there, the park is approximately 2.4 km away on foot.
Forest Park Kono-yama brings together flowers, star-filled skies, wildlife, educational activities, local food, and outdoor recreation in one scenic destination. Whether you visit to see spring azaleas, meet the sheep, explore Nabekura Gorge, or simply enjoy the mountain views, the park offers a peaceful way to experience the natural beauty of Yamazoe Village.
