Jionji Terrace is a comprehensive visitor center in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, introducing the history, culture, and highlights of the former precincts of Jionji Temple. The former temple precincts were designated a National Historic Site in 2014. Stopping at Jionji Terrace before exploring the temple grounds allows visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Jionji’s long history and cultural significance.
Built around the concept of “Connecting Time, Connecting Places,” the facility combines historical materials with modern visual technology, including projection mapping and a large theater. These exhibits make it possible to experience the history of Jionji not only through written information and artifacts but also through immersive images.
The facility also includes “Tera Soba & Tera Cafe,” where visitors can enjoy local food and drinks. Jionji Terrace is therefore a convenient base for sightseeing, taking a break, and learning about the temple before exploring the historic grounds.
In the entrance hall, the “Jionji Temple Illustrated Map” is displayed as a large graphic covering an entire wall. The illustration depicts Jionji during the period when the temple complex was at its height of prosperity.
Using a large screen measuring approximately 3 meters by 3 meters, the display provides an overview of the former temple complex. It helps visitors visualize what Jionji looked like in the past and understand how the many buildings and temple facilities were once arranged before walking through the present-day grounds.
A 65-inch large monitor presents the “Jionji Walking Guide.” Visitors can check recommended walking routes through the former temple precincts, as well as current highlights and safety information.
Checking the guide before setting out is a useful way to plan a visit and make the most of the historic landscape.
The main attraction in the permanent exhibition room is “Jionji Time-Space Travel.” Projection mapping is displayed on a giant diorama measuring approximately 4 meters by 4 meters, creating an immersive introduction to the history of Jionji.
The exhibition explores the temple’s approximately 1,300-year history, including the many temple buildings and monastic quarters that once formed the complex. It also introduces Shugendo training, a tradition of mountain asceticism and spiritual practice historically associated with the temple and surrounding mountains.
Rather than learning about history solely through written explanations and documents, visitors can see the changing story of Jionji presented through a three-dimensional model and dynamic images. This makes the exhibition accessible even to visitors who are discovering Jionji for the first time.
The facility’s theater room features a 4K large-scale round theater approximately 3 meters high and 20 meters wide.
Using advanced visual technology, the theater introduces important cultural treasures associated with Jionji, including the renowned Twelve Heavenly Generals. The expansive screen creates a powerful viewing experience and allows visitors to appreciate these historic works of Buddhist art from a new perspective.
Watching the presentation before visiting the actual temple can also help visitors recognize and better appreciate the cultural treasures and historic features they encounter during their walk through the grounds.
The Special Exhibition Room regularly hosts temporary exhibitions focusing on various aspects of Jionji’s history, culture, and surrounding region.
Because the themes and displays change periodically, repeat visitors may discover something new each time. The exhibitions are also a useful introduction for anyone who wants to learn more about the cultural traditions and regional history connected with Jionji.
“Tera Soba & Tera Cafe” is located within the facility, providing a convenient place to enjoy a meal or take a break during a visit.
The restaurant focuses on soba dishes, including nikusoba, a regional specialty particularly associated with Yamagata. It is an excellent opportunity to combine a visit to Jionji with a taste of one of the prefecture’s distinctive local dishes.
The cafe also serves locally oriented beverages, including “Sagae Coffee,” a regional brand known for its clean, rich flavor.
After exploring the history and culture of Jionji, visitors can relax over local food and drinks, adding a leisurely element to their sightseeing experience.
A scenic rest area is located after climbing Niomon-zaka, the approach toward Jionji’s main hall. From here, visitors can take a break while looking out over the surrounding rural landscape.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In autumn, the area is particularly attractive when red spider lilies come into bloom. The vivid red flowers, traditional temple scenery, and surrounding countryside create a picturesque atmosphere that is one of the pleasures of visiting Jionji in autumn.
Jionji Terrace offers an easy and engaging way to learn about one of Tohoku’s historic temples before exploring the actual temple grounds. Through projection mapping, dioramas, large-scale video, and historical materials, visitors can gain a clear introduction to Jionji’s long history and cultural heritage.
The “Jionji Temple Illustrated Map” provides an overview of the former temple complex, while “Jionji Time-Space Travel” brings approximately 1,300 years of history to life. The large theater then offers an impressive introduction to the temple’s precious cultural treasures.
Visitors can also enjoy local flavors at Tera Soba & Tera Cafe and take a break while admiring the surrounding rural scenery. When visiting Jionji Temple, consider starting at Jionji Terrace to discover the story behind the temple before setting out to explore the historic precincts for yourself.
